I'm pretty liberal, and I was just wondering how politically active Tufts is. I know some people who goes there and it looks like 75% of there facebook pictures are them at some kind of occupy thing, or something else similar. Is this just my friends, or are a lot of the kids at tufts like this?

I would say politically active students are in abundance on campus, but I’m sure there is a minority of less-aware or even apathetic students. It is considered a fairly left-leaning student body overall.
Even a casual look at the Tufts website will show Tufts’ emphasis on “global citizenship”. So I think it attracts and selects that type of student.

Political and civic engagement is a very big thing here; from students’ participation in political activities to the frequent events which Tufts organisations host which bring in some of the premier political minds and practitioners in the world.

The campus political atmosphere is decidedly progressive, but it is tolerant of any view which respects human dignity.

Tufts places a big emphasis on political engagement. Students here work for and create campaigns, do political and social research, write insightful articles, and have vigourous and frequent political discourse. It goes far beyond mere bumper-sticker activism here.

Liberal leaning, but open minded political atmosphere

Bill Clinton and Nancy Pelosi spoke on campus this year

yet

Scott Brown (republican senator, good basketball player) attended while I was there and I had John Sununu (republican senator, chief of staff under George H.W. Bush) as a professor

It’s definitely liberal oriented, but the vibe I got from the campus was that it accepts all student views. I joke with my friend who got in though, because he’s er…different – he loves Ron Paul, and he’s a libertarian – I wonder whether his eccentric views will be accepted (lol, I’m just putting forth the fact that Paul isn’t exactly the GOP frontrunner. ;)) I’m a liberal democrat, and American Gov is my passion, but I’m pretty sure Tufts accepts everybody – the eccentric libertarian as well! :)

We also had Karl Rove speak today, and he near-filled a 450 person auditorium. Most people didn’t agree with him but were respectful about it (there were maybe 25 protesters outside, who were also respectful)

If anyone is trying to make a last minute decision, and it worried about the political climate, especially as it relates to campus attitudes towards conservatives, feel free to send me an email and I can connect you with the president of the Tufts Republicans to help you sort this out.
