Political and Religious Views at Tufts

Current students, Ariesathena - What seems to be the prevalent religion or lack thereof at Tufts? Where do most students stand politically? Is it a pretty good balance?

You ask this about a school in MA? Its got the full range of politics everything from ubber liberal to Bader-Meinhof Gang with a fair sprinkling of Ted Kaczynski wannabes and Usama Bin Laden groupees.

Actually the conservatives on campus are very loud and represent themselves far more than the numbers would suggest. Tufts is more conservative than what most people make it out to be. I would have to say a majority of people are moderate liberals. Definitely not quite a Wesleyan in my opinion.

Well I guess everything is relative. From Michael Moore's end of the teeter-totter Kristie Alley only looks moderately plump.

Thats good though that there is a conservative voice...I think schools like Wes end up missing out because there is no fruitful dialogue between political groups. (I guess they have the varying degrees of incredibly left, but ...)

Hah, Patux, I like your descriptions. Glad that there is a mix for sure.

What about religions?

When I visited, my tour guide said that there was a large Jewish student population. As a Catholic, she said that there were not always many appetizing non-meat alternatives for Fridays during Lent.

My D is entering the class of 2009. She is Catholic. I've heard that they have great vegetarian options.

35% Jewish, and I think some 40-50% active Christian.

I'm a vegetarian - there's always a lot of good food to eat during Lent, or any time of the year. Dewick is MUCH better than Carmichael for it.

At least when I went, Tufts was liberal, liberal, and liberal. Maybe things have changed - but I always felt as if the conservatives kept quiet about politics, given the sheer animosity towards anyone not anti-Bush.

What is the rest of the 15-25%? :)

Muslim, Hindu, or "none-of-the-above" - like Buddhist, Wiccan, or atheist/agnostic.

I can count! :)

Might a vegan venture into Medford?

My friend's vegan. She survives. She said the vegetarian food (though still could be improved) is significantly better than what she has gotten at any other institution she's visited (Berkeley, ick!). She calls us fine dining, but I suppose for a vegan that says a lot even though I'm a picky food eater.

That's good news...right now, I'm at a boarding school where I eat peanut butter & jelly 80% of the time. I'm ready for a change.

Tufts is politically quite liberal, with a small but vocal conservative minority. Dennis Kucinich, Howard Dean, Michael Moore, and Hillary Clinton are all hugley popular at Tufts (certainly much more so than they are nationally).

<3 <3 I can't wait to go to school with people who share my views! My school is sooo psycho religious right-winged! <3 <3
