How prestigious is UCSD in America?

This might sound like a stupid question, but since I am a person living abroad, this might be important in some ways ^_^
So any how, I just wanted to know how UCSD stands among all other universities in the U.S.
If you walk by the street in a random state and ask if you know about UCSD, will most of the people know about the school?

This is a huge dillema for me because I got into Washington University in St. Louis but I heard UCSD is superior in Bioengineering which I got into.
What do you guys think?

Thank you very much!
!

wash u st louis is more "prestigious" as a college in general. i dont know much abt bioengineering so i cant help there. but UCSD is still a solid school. definitely above average in america. overall though wash u is more intellectual etc

oh, so UCSD isn't considered as a prestigious school? =/ One of the high tiers?

Most people on the street have heard of 3 schools: Harvard, Yale, and their state's public university, unless the state happens to be California with more than one good public university. You shouldn't pick a school based on this.

UCSD is #2 in BioE, after Johns Hopkins and is overall pretty high up there for engineering.

WashU in St. Louis is pretty high up there in terms of how much f-ing mail they sent to my house, pleading me to apply to their school (and probably, thus, artificially decreasing their admission rates)

Sorry, still a little bitter even though this was two years ago. They probably killed three trees to send me the amount of literature I got.

lol i feel the same about washU they sent me sooooooooooooo much mail... watta waste.

According to U.S. News 2007 Best College edition, Washington University in St. Louis is #12 overall, while UCSD is #38. However, in the "At engineering schools whose highest degree is a doctorate," (the best engineering undergrad program) UCSD is 25th and WashU is 43rd. But these are just numbers, you should base your decision off of what other research you do as well.

Overall, UCSD is ranked lower than WashU. However, in terms of engineering UCSD is superior to WashU and UCSD's bioengineering is far superior to WashU's (or any other school for that matter).

So really, if you say UCSD bioengineering vs WashU bioengineering, UCSD has way more prestige.

(I got into UCSD beng so i might be a little biased, but its true :) )

BioE vs Bioe (BIOTECH)

what's the big difference?

(got into the latter)

^ im wondering the same thing

I chose BioE: Biotech as my first choice in my application and didn't notice just BioE

Anyone know the major differences?

Biotech focuses more on agricultural, animal and plant ie industrial applications of biological engineering. Biological engineering focuses on both the medical and the industrial applications. At least that's the difference between Biomed, Biotech and Bioeng at most uni's.
