how selective is ann arbor?

with reference to GPA/SAT scores... is there anywhere where I can find the average applicant GPA/SAT infomation? I've just added Ann Arbor to my list (haven't visited yet... going to do that this summer, I hope!)

Would something like a 3.8W (only about 3.3UW) combined with a high SAT score (2100+) with a few EC credentials and a few hundred community service hours be enough to get in?

I see everybody in the "admitted" topic getting 4.0UW's from out-of-state.

:(

Straight from the admissions website...

I'd say that you have a shot at getting in. Just make sure you try to raise your grades (I assume you're a junior), write strong essays, and get good recommendations. Also, make sure you apply early.

the acceptance rate for michigan is pretty high, so don't think of it as some ridiculously hard school to get into (i think the acceptance rate is around 50-60% in US News for 2006). you definitely don't need a 4.0 UW and 2100 SAT to get in. i had a 3.45 UW and a 2140, very strong EC's, and minority status (i was national hispanic scholar) and when i posted my stats in a thread, people told me i was right on par and there were many people who were admitted with worse stats than mine. i think your community service will help tons; make sure your recs and essays are good (mine were) to make up for your low gpa. if you can pull that off, you should be fine. best of luck.

If you are a top student, Michigan is not that selective. Otherwise, Michigan is very selective. Everything seem to check out for you except for your unweighed GPA, which is significantly lower than the Michigan norm. However, if you have taken loads of AP classes and if your school is well known to Michigan, you have a chance. I would definitely focus on your GPA for the rest of this semester and the first semester of your senior year. Given your current stats, I'd say Michigan is a slight reach for you.

if you apply in september i think it is a safety for you

JB, students with sub 3.7 GPAs can seldom consider Michigan a safety. Most likely, the OP will be deferred and the decision will not be made until his school sends in his mid-year report of his senior year. Of course, if the OP is a student at Lawrenceville High School, a 3.3 GPA, along with his 2100+ SAT score would probably be sufficient to make Michigan a safe match...otherwise, I'd say Michigan is a slight reach.

whats an OP?

OP = original poster, the person who wrote the question

how does UW 3.8 and 1970(1370+600) applying to Engineering as an international looks like? urrr... though I am going to take SAT once more... maybe twice ( I only took it once) .

How much did you get on your math section of the SAT? Are you taking Calculus and Physics? If so, how are you doing in those classes?

I got 720physics 760 Chem 790M2C
and I took AP physics B and got 5 last year and I am planning to take Chem and Calculus BC. I live in Asia. Our school doesnt have AP classes.

Oh... additionally all my math grade are B... and I have justification for that.. would this hurt my application?

If you got a 5 on your AP Physics and are taking Calculus BC this year, along with your SAT and unweighed GPA, I'd say you have a very realistic chance of getting in. Apply in September if possible, so that you can have an acceptance come October or November at the latest.

Thanks Alexandre. I have been reading your posts and those really helped me to know about U.Mich

Hm, Alexandre sounds super knowledgeable about Ann Arbor :) With my basic stats, how realistic a chance do I stand @ Ann Arbor?

GPA: 3.8W (3.35ish UW) --> ALSO. The AVERAGE applicant at our school who got into Ann Arbor had a 3.99W GPA + 2020 SATI's.
SATI: 2200 [720v 760m 720w]
SATIIs:
- Chemistry 780
- MathIIC 720
- French 770

I'm also taking the following APs this year: Chemistry & Mod European History...

And senior year I'm taking AP English, AP French, AP Envi Sci, and AP Calc AB. I've always been taking the hardest courseload possible: all honors + APs, an I've been getting some B's in them... (3.7 ~ 9th, 3.5 ~ 10th, 4.2 ~ 11th) so far. I'm working on raising that GPA!

My ECs are very specialized - not a laundry list of the ones post people most here, like NHS, etcetc... I have numerous national/state art awards (is applying with an art portfolio helpful? my artwork is a big thing for me), I've been tutoring underprivledged middle school students, worked on an all-regional nonprofit professional literary magazine (as an intern), I've shadowed doctors @ a local hospital for mannny hours, leader of a new club that promotes cancer funding... and so forth.

My recs will be decent (one fantastic, one okay)! GC rec will also be good, and essay will be decent...
