How "social" are Monroe and Sharp

Hi all,
I’ll be attending Tulane in the fall and have begun looking into dorms and roommates. It seems over all that people have a good time and get good grades wherever they end up living but I was hoping someone could elaborate specifically on Monroe or Sharp. I’m planning on majoring in biomedical engineering which definitely seems to require a fair share of studying and choosing books over parties. I would like to live in either Monroe or Sharp just because of the ease of meeting people and being social, however my parents are convinced they’re just party dorms and don’t want me to live there. To what extant is this true? I realize that there will be parties in all of the dorms and there are super studious people in all of them as well, but does living in Monroe or Sharp make it more difficult to buckle down and work? Is the noise level hard to deal with if you’re focusing on schoolwork? I don’t consider myself a big partier and don’t think I’d have to worry about going down the wrong track but I also don’t want to put myself in a situation where it’s a lot harder to stay focused on studying. Any insight on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have heard quite a bit of feedback that this is not actually the case most of the time. On the weekends yes, and it can occasionally happen during the week, but generally it isn’t bad. Besides, there are tons of quiet places to study on campus, and not just the library.

I have known numerous honors students and DHS winners that have chosen Monroe and Sharp for freshman year and they did just fine. It’s way more on you than anything the environment of these dorms will cause. As long as you are reasonably disciplined, you will be fine. But if you are looking for something between these two dorms and the somewhat opposite vibe of Butler, then Wall or Greenbaum would be good choices. But still, I think your parents are overly concerned about Monroe and Sharp unless you are the kind of person that is easily tempted. You have to be honest with yourself about that. But if you can say “no” when you have to, then you should be fine.

Thanks FC! I just talked to a friend who recently graduated from Tulane. He recommended that I try Wall since, as you said, it’s somewhere in between the environment of M/S and Butler. Although I’ll probablg keep Sharp as a second choice

My D lived in Wall freshman year and loved it. She is quite social and found many friends that were also, along with friends in all of the other dorms as well. She really liked that her room was one that opened up to the outside and the suite style bathroom.

My daughter is a freshman in Monroe and she loves it. She has never complained of excessive noise. However, she asked for Beats earphones so she can study without being disturbed but she likes to study in the common room.
