How soon can I get an internship?

I am currently doing my A' Levels(British Educaion System). I am taking Biology,Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. I am planning to go to the states for higher education. I'll probably major in mechanical engineering.
Assuming I get an A in all four of these subjects and maintain a GPA of at least 3.5, how soon can I expect to get a paid internship? Also, are internships easily available during the semester and what are my chances of getting one?
And how hard is it to have at least a 10$/hour job(or internship) throught the year? How many people do you know have at least 10$/hour jobs?

You don’t start an internship for the money, but for the experience. As such, paid internships are harder to come by. Acing all your A-Levels and maintaining a decent GPA doesn’t affect how “soon” you’ll get a paid internship. You’ll have to search for one that fits your situation (mechanical engineering freshman—I assume you’re asking because you’ll start looking for an internship once you’re in the states, not abroad).

“How soon” is impossible to answer. Different internships have different rules. Some may only want at least students in their third year of college, while others will only take grads. It can be very difficult finding a paid internship. I’m unsure about the state of internships in Engineering; you’d find more options for Economics, Marketing, Computer Science, etc. majors.

Depending on which company you want to work for, who you know, your own initiative and what school you’re attending, you can get a paid internship as soon as you are a freshman or sometime before/during junior year.

For international students, it’s not that easy.
