I'm considering applying to Mary Washington, but I was wondering how stereotypically "Southern" (ie. conservative, preppy, etc.) it was. I'm from Michigan and am liberal and not particularly preppy or anything like that, so would I fit in at all? I want to go to a school where not everybody is exactly the same as me, but I don't really like the descriptions of some other southern schools and I'd rather go to a more liberal-leaning school. Thanks.

My kids are interested in Mary Washington as well. I believe it probably is more preppy than you might want. However, don't be so quick to assume that all schools in the South are conservative. While many are, school such ad Emory and Duke are not.

We live in Atlanta- but I was born and raised in Florida- are there other schools you have thought about? What about George Mason- near DC- entire area is not a bastion of conservatism. If you want some other ideas, PM me and I will see what I can come up with. Good luck in your search!

Georgiatwins,

What's Agnes Scott like? One of my students is thinking of applying there for a USA year abroad program (from Germany).

The students I know at Univ of Mary Washington are neither conservative or preppy. You might want to take a look at William and Mary.

Hey Upsilamba, I am about to enter my sophomore year at UMW. To answer your question, our campus is pretty mixed in that aspect, regardless of what Princeton Review might tell you. I am involved in Young Democrats at school and UMW has one of the largest YD clubs in Virginia. There are the conservative, preppy people on campus, but it's not a very stereotypically Southern school. We have a lot of out-of-staters from New England and I know of a few people from Michigan. I myself am from Northern VA. Hope this answers your question!
