Hi guys!

I recently discovered Colby and I really like it. I want to major in some type of international studies/relations, so I was pleased to discover that Colby offers global studies. I think it's nice that I would concentrate on a region instead majoring or minoring in it.

For the past year, I have had my heart set on Middle Eastern studies. I noticed that there were fewer courses offered for the Middle East concentration than there were for the European or East Asian concentrations. Will those courses be enough to educate me about the area? Will I get to learn Arabic?

Also, how is the GS major overall?

If it isn't one of Colby's strengths, does anyone know of any similar colleges that are more internationally-focused?

I have Middlebury on my list, but I'm not sure how great my chances are of being admitted. I'm not certain about Colby either!

Thanks for reading this and I appreciate any responses!

Hi I am really interested in this topic too. When I visited they seemed very globally focused which I loved! I got the impression that their global studies major looked fantastic. The classes offered seem really interesting. I also think the fact that study abroad is so popular strengthens their global studies department. Their middle eastern studies part didn’t seem as strong as other areas. I asked and they currently only offer two years of Arabic. I would check out macalester college. They seem extremely internationally focused, even more so then Colby. Their student body is also 13 percent international. From looking online they seem to have more to offer in terms of the middle east and Arabic. I am visiting soon and am really excited to see what I think of it. Also side note Gettysburg college has 3 years of Arabic and a middle eastern program. It’s really cool that we have similar interests in colleges and majors!

LAC2017: Thanks so much! I do have Macalester on my list, but for some reason, Maine sounds so much more mysterious. Two years is definitely better than none. I glad that Colby’s study abroad program is so popular. I definitely want to do it!

I’m glad that you’re geting to visit! My parents said that I can only check out the colleges if I get in. Good luck to you!
