How to best complete the Activities section...

What is the best way to complete the activities section if your activities don’t fall under the vague activities given by the common app? Is it best to be short and sweet or should i try to describe each activity as much as I can?

I didn’t think it was necessary to specific hours/grades here.

I was wondering if anybody could give me suggestions to best fill out this section.

Varsity Soccer - “Honors Held” - JV (9,10,11) JV Captain (11) + Club Soccer (9,10,11)

Varsity Outdoor Track - “Honors Held” - JV (9,10), Varsity Letter (11)

Science/Math - “Honors Held” - blank (should i describe the activity here?)
“Details” - Mathletes. Students from school compete against other high school stuents in a math-based competition.

Religious - “Honors Held” - Senior Lector
“Details” - Senior Lector, Parish Festival Volunteer, March for Life Participant (Respect Life Club)

Academic - “Honors Held” - blank
“Details” National Honor Society → Tutoring, Tour guide, commitment to academic excellence

Community Service - “Honors Held” - blank
“Details” - LSC–> Service Corps. Various projects and activities in Philadelphia, Camden, NYC, school community.

Other - “Honors Held” - blank
“Details” - Leadership Mentor program. Week devoted to strengthening leadership skills of young kids.

Basically, should I describe these activities as much as possible with the space provided? I feel like the titles and brief descriptions do not adequately describe the activity and what I actually did.

Suggestions?

I would suggest keeping it short, and then sending in a pseudo-resume.

bump.. anyone else?

what do you do if the school specifically says that they will not except any additional resumes?

Yeah, keep that short, but do send in a resume.

modulation - how would you go about sending in an activites resume?

word document. title. position. one paragraph description. ?

are activities resumes appropriate if college do not specify if they accept them or not?

Just make a copy of the extracurricular activites chart on the common app, with a column for description. Only 2-3 sentences for description; as short as possible. Yes they’re acceptable. Colleges aren’t going to say, “We do not accept your resume.” It shouldn’t be so much a resume as an extension of the common app ec chart.

^thanks. and dchow would you say that it’s typical for applicants to send in a resume to top 20 schools?

Darthmouth admissions officer told me it’s very common for private school kids to send them in because they’re “in the know.”

thanks ealgian. i wouldn’t have sent one in were it not for you guys. this put me at ease for my ECs for now. thanks.
