I'm in a nursing program and you have to A maintain a C average and B pass a math test each semester with a 90 or above you get 2 shots at this test and then your out of the program. They had a bunch of us go to a tutor that they stated was trained by them to know how to do this math, so me and 8 others went and 5 of us failed the second time around. When we saw the results it was A all the questions that each other got wrong and B it was how the tutor told us how to do the math for those problems. We told this to the Chair of the Dept but she stated we could challenge the test grade but, what are my hope really? I was told I would be re-accepted in the fall should I just suck it up? In the mean time I was told to keep coming to class and clinicals until a decsion was made. what do you all think?

Math for nursing is usually a lot of fractions (which are really division problems) and percentages and ratios. I don’t really think you can blame the tutor. Did you get out of high school? Didn’t you learn most of the math in high school? I think you just need to study harder, or figure that nursing may be too difficult a subject area for you to pursue, and you should start to look into other career options. Does the school have a career advisor you can talk to? Is this a for-profit career school, or regular college/university? The advising will be different at a career school, because they will want you to stay no matter what.

i take it you’ve never done dosage calc before and No i’ve been out of highschool for some time. I’m an LPN- I’m not about to throw in the towel and say oops too hard for me oh well- wow thanks bad advise- THIS IS AN UNIVERSITY- I’m halfway the program- also not fractions- dimensional analysis, drip rates with a lot of other crap - which in the REAl world where I currently work pharmacy and our pyxis machines already compute that - Our teachers are the first to say this is old school that is still being taught- ALSO if you read what i wrote then you would have seen that i stated 5 out of 8 failed and all got the questions wrong- hummmm

Is this the type of math you had to do?

Study some by yourself and figure it out. If that link is representative of what you saw then you should be able to learn it. Maybe the tutor did teach you wrong, but assuming you know what the definitions of everything is (for instance, I had to find out what exactly “drop factor” was) then someone with a high school education really should be able to figure it out.

I don’t know how you can challenge the test grade. If your answers were wrong then they were wrong, whether or not you got it wrong because your tutor taught you wrong. Your only chance would be that they graded the test incorrectly.

I don’t know enough about the situation to say what will happen to you as I have no knowledge at all of nursing education. What does readmitted in the fall mean? Will you have to repeat all the classes you’ve taken thus far?

Yup, was Dir. of Ed at a school that taught med assistants. Just tried a few liquid dosage calculations, and ,like I said, it’s ratios. I teach 7th grade pre-algebra, and my class will be learning to calculate ratios in a month. Word problems in the text even about giving medicine. Do they allow you to use a calculator? If so, you really should be able to get this math - I am sure the university has students who could tutor, probably for free…
Did you ask the 3 students who passed how they passed?

yes- they did not go to the tutor who was trained by the nursing dept- also ALL i’m asking for is advise on how to word my challege form- I spoke with the acdemic dean and he stated i had a strong case, they have already opened up an internal investigating into this, apparently my term was not the only one- this is the first time in 10 yrs the the college is losing 20 students first term 10 students second 5 third (mine) and 8 fourth term ( which is the homerun) we all do the same test- thanks anyways- also MA school is nothing compared to nursing school- but thanks
