How to figure out your college GPA? My GPA might be wrong?

So far I've taken 8 classes at my local community college.
I have 2 A's, 3 B's, and 3 C's. 1 class is only 1 credit, and one class is 2 credits. The rest are 3 credit courses.
I have 21 credit hours.
I have 59.50 total grade points.
But I only have a 2.4 GPA.
I thought that you divide 59.50 into 21. Isn't that what your supposed to do? Because when I divide 59.50 into 21, I get a GPA of 2.8. I don't understand how the college is getting a 2.4 GPA.

I have been calculating my GPA through GPA calculators online, and all of them say that my GPA should be a 2.9. And I go on other college websites to do this(like tulane college).

So how do I find out my GPA? Is my college calculating my GPA right?
I am probably going to go over to the college tomorrow to question them about this.

If your A’s are in your 1 and 2 credit class then you would have a 2.42. Is that the case? If so I get 6 grade pts for the A’s, 27 for the B’s, and 18 for the C’s for a total of 51 which would be divided by 21 hours for a 2.42.

I have 2 A’s. One class was the 1 credit course, but the other class was a 3 credit course.
I have 3 B’s. One class was the 2 credit course, but the 2 others were 3 credit courses.
I have 3 C’s, all of which are 3 credit courses.

But here’s another thing that I’m thinking could be affecting my GPA. I had to retake 2 classes. The college told me that the original grade from the first time I took the class won’t be affected, but my credits should be higher. I should have 23 total credits, which tells me that they probably didn’t factor in my new grade and credits of the classes that I retook.

And like I said in my question, I went on several online GPA calculators, factored in what my grades and credits are, and I got a 2.8 in all of them.

Yeesh, I thought GPA was solely done by adding up the 4.0-1.0 for A-F and dividing by the # of classes. Damn, maybe I don’t have the 3.3 I thought I did.

(How many credits the class is worth) X (The numerical value of the letter grade) = Value

Do this for every class and add them all up = (Y)

(Y) / total number of credits = GPA

What is killing your GPA is getting Cs in all of you 3 credit classes.

I don’t see how you’re getting 59.5. I got 58.

Either way, 58/21 is 2.78.

Something’s missing here.

Are the original grades from the classes you retook in the list above? You probably need to include them when you compute the GPA.

Suppose you got no credit for one 3-credit courses. Then your total credit hours are still 21, but you would need to divide your grade points by 24 (= attempted credit hours) to compute your GPA.

I don’t know how to quote, but barlum, yes, the original classes I took before I retook them are still on my unofficial transcript. I was told that they will be on my official transcript too, but that they won’t count into my GPA. The only grade that should matter and count in my GPA is the grade I got when I retook the classes.

Well, just for the heck of it, what would your GPA come out to be if your initial grades did count into the GPA? 2.4 by any chance?

Your GPA for those 21 credits is a 2.762. If it says something other than that it is wrong.

Are there by chance minuses and pluses that might be a factor? Are other classes with other grades being counted in there?

Qwerty, one of my C’s is is C+.
And barlum, my GPA would be a 2.8 with my initial grades, not counting the 3 original classes before I retook them.

Initial grades would consist of the grades before you retook the classes.

Another thread of yours indicated that you got a D in one class (which I assume you retook) and that you retook a class you previously failed.

You might end up with a 2.4 GPA if those grades somehow factored into your GPA.

If you retake a class with a D, you may not get credit for it again.

All of these issues could be clarified by taking your transcript to someone from your school.

I know one college that lets student retake courses and they only count once in their GPA and they use the average of the two grades! … I’d suggest you call your school to see how they explicitly treat those courses you have retaken (do they count once or twice? do you only use the new grade or also the old grade? etc)
