How to get a roommate with similar major

We’ve done the roommate finder on the Bama website. Nowhere on there did it ask for prospective major. Son would really like to live in a community where there are other engineering majors. He does not want to do Bryant, as it is not honors, although it may be an option for his upperclass years. Any suggestions to find roommates that are also engineering majors?

What about the Facebook room-mate thingy?

Well, if he doesn’t want to do Bryant, just have him search for kids that are engineering majors on the facebook page. There’s a women’s engineer’s mini-community in one of the Lakesides, but Bryant is the only engineering one for guys.

It’s interesting that the prospective major is not asked for on that site. I would still recommend facebooking potential roommates and seeing how that goes. There are some people who like to room with people of a similar major and those that don’t. Even if he doesn’t rooms with people of other majors, there should still be other engineering majors in his hall. Plenty of male engineering majors don’t want to live in Bryant and there are also female engineering majors living outside the engineering living-learning community.

I would also ask Bama to add the “chosen major” feature to its roommate finder.

I know that my son didn’t request, but he got all engineering roommates his first year. However, I don’t think it makes a big difference, because 2 of the roomies changed their majors within the first semester. So, choosing engineering roomies may not get roomies that will stay in engineering.

I agree with M2CK. Looking for a roommate in your prospective major is nice, but kids do change majors. One of my son’s roommates has changed three or four times this year.

You’re better off having roommates with different majors. It’ll help with papers and other assignments.

If you want a friend with the same major at least, feel free to private message me. I’m going into Engineering this fall and living in Ridgecrest South… tell your son to find me on facebook if you want!

^ funny you should mention that - my son mentioned seeing you on UA2014 FB a few days back, we have a place in Flagler Beach and were discussing the benefits of having a roomie who would be heading the same way on breaks etc. I’m assuming you’re the guy from St. Augustine?! :)

That’s surreal, hahaha! Yeah, I’m from St Augustine, I felt like I was the only Floridian in the class. Which one was your son? I’ve honestly been struggling to find roommates on facebook because I joined the discussion late and a lot of people already grouped together.

We’re from Illinois, moved up from Florida 10+ years ago, but keep a place in Flagler. He hasn’t joined the group yet, just lurking. Guess he needs to get at it with room assignments starting in two weeks or so.
Will have him look for you on the FB site!

Oh that’s right, you aren’t sold on UA yet are you? Well have him add me, I’d be glad to have one less stranger when I show up in August.

^ was sold on UA until this USC thing came through… at this point he’s ready to move down to UA right now, early admissions and scholarship notification does that to you  I’m being the devil’s advocate and asking him to check out USC… not sensing he’s too overjoyed about it.

Haha, I know exactly what you mean by that. I cant wait for fall to roll around, especially knowing that most of my money concerns are taken care of.

USC’s a great school though. Like I said in the other thread, my friends are sophomores there and have been telling me hilarious stories all weekend about life there. Sounds like a wonderful place to live, but I just preferred Bama. Fit my personality more.
