How to Get in From Deferred?

Any tips on how to demonstrate continued interest.

The e-mail said notify them of new awards and stuff, but how about new essays?

xjay help out here, you were deferred and then admitted right?

What did you do?

"Any tips on how to demonstrate continued interest."

That's not what's important. Harvard has the highest yield rate in the country. It knows that for most applicants, it is their #1 choice.

What's important in changing a deferral to an acceptance is demonstrating excellence such as letting Harvard know if you obtain any significant accomplishments that happened after you submitted your EA application.

Ooh, same question here. Are we allowed to send in additional essays?

So would things like Intel semi-finalist/finalist be the type of thing that might push you over the edge in the RD round?

Being an Intel finalist is the type of thing that might be a tip factor. It certainly would be a major accomplishment.

Being a National Merit finalist, however, probably would not be a tip factor since Harvard gets so many applicants like that. Fine to update Harvard if one makes finalist, but don't bet the bank that that will lead to an acceptance. It could be a major factor, however, in getting merit aid/admissions at some other top 25 colleges.

Alright, outside of winning Intel.
Were all 100 or so deferred admits last year people who won new awards and sent new stuff to the admissions office?
Or is it also possible to just get in the way you are.

How big of a tip is needed?

And back to my original question is a new essay ok. The more I look at my original essay the less I like it.

Now I read it again,.,

I don't like my original essay at all..........

maybe send an additional essay or something?...

Anyone have any ideas what i could do. Im just really bummed and i dont know what national things are left. I guess its pretty much over for Harvard 2010 for me. Wow, what a ride, what a ride indeed.

Agreed, Biz.

look what I found(:
although it's last year's, hope this helps..

In total for the Class of 2009 (including both early and regular decision), Harvard received 22,796 applications, and 2,074 were admitted – an acceptance rate of 9.1%.
***SINGLE CHOICE EARLY ACTION: Harvard received 4140 single choice early action applications (a 7.2% increase from last year), and accepted ~885, deferred ~3120, and rejected ~135 – so the early action acceptance rate was 21.4%.
Regular Decision: Approximately 18,660 students applied to Harvard's regular decision program, and 1,189 were accepted, a regular decision acceptance rate of 6.4%.

Including the 3,120 deferred SCEA students who became part of the regular decision candidate pool yields a regular decision acceptance rate of approximately 5.5%.

1,047 of the admitted students were men, and 1,027 were women.
Together, foreign citizens, U.S. dual citizens, and U.S. permanent residents make up 16.6% of the Class of 2009.

so... i guess majority(meaning about 75%) of last year's EAer's were deferred... if our stats are similar to last year's i guess now we have to compete with approximately 18660 new 'fabulous' applicants... with the new admission rate being 5~6%...

kinda discouraging, huh?

Does Harvard allow us to revise our essays or ask for different recs?

Can someone please answer this question on supplemental essays. If we didn't write the supplemental essay the first time around, can we write one now?

XJAYZ answer our questions please!

When should you update them with all this stuff? I have some new stuff, but REALLY need to work on all these applications since I got deferred... Is Jan 1st too late (if we are under the same January 1st deadline as RD, for stuff that doesn't show up only after Jan 1st)?

I'd wait until the end of February and send in an "update package" with whatever you've got.

I basically sent them a letter saying Harvard was still my first choice and I would 100% attend if accepted. Furthermore, I submitted additional essays and recommendations I felt showed other aspects of my personality that was not as strong in my original EA application. I will not go into specifics because of privacy issues, but even for a deferred admit like me, and I've met several here, we all don't know why we got in later on, since we weren't [insert national/international award here] kind of people.

zogoto
you got deferred??
hope you dont end up a "nghi" (remember our little joke dont you?)
anyways.
all the best.
keep trying.
i know you can do it.
:)
(AND I MEAN IT)

"I basically sent them a letter saying Harvard was still my first choice and I would 100% attend if accepted."

no offense but isnt that kind off silly.
most of the guys applying to harvard would "kill" to get in.
i mean 'harvard is everyone's first choice'.
which is why it boasts of a 91% yield rate.

aravinhurt: It doesn't matter what you think in this case, does it? Because whether the adcom counted it or discounted it, I'm here regardless. I'm just telling you what I did, which certainly is not universal for all deferred admits.

ok ok
no need to get "rude" :D
i knew that was about to come.

:)
today just isnt my day sigh

I understand the feeling that all of you are going through right now because just one year ago, I was in your shoes.
