Hi, I was recently accepted into Arizona today and while I was excited I did the math and realized as an OOS student plus the Arizona excellence award I received ($8000 a year) I would have to still pay $42,000 a year which is insane. 1. Can I apply for instate tuition after 1 year? 2. Any suggestions on how to get the price lower? And 3. Just good advice on my situation. Thanks any help would be appreciated!
You need to find a cheaper option. that’s my good advice.
What about your own instate colleges?
I’m in-state for both Michigan and Georgia. I’m applying to MSU(even though I don’t like it) and I’ve applied to Georgia Tech, Georgia state and University of Georgia. But Arizona was at the top of my list for favorite schools.
Was there financial air or merit awards from Arizona that you were expecting that didn’t come through?
Arizona is not a meets-full-need school, and you are OOS. I’m afraid you’re going to have to let this school go.
Have you run net price calculators on the other schools on your list to make sure something will be affordable? There is still time to apply elsewhere if necessary.
No the yearly $8000 was what I expected I’ll be applying to scholarships the the scholarship universe and I will see if I can get in-state tuition after one year. If that doesn’t work then I’ll be forced to go elsewhere.
Yes I have applied to other schools Arizona was just one of 9 schools I’ve applied to it just happened to be a school I really wanted to go to and who I’ve heard back from first.
Ok, so this is going to make me sound like a jerk, but – why didn’t you do the math before you applied? That way, there wouldn’t have been any nasty surprises, and you possibly would have made a better (and certainly better informed) decision and not wasted an application fee on a school that appears to be unaffordable.
Yeah your absolutely right. Arizona was my dream school and I know I can afford the first year so my hope was that I could along with other scholarships get in-state tuition which I’ll be contacting admissions about soon.
Read the residency rules here.

^ Paragraph 1 from above:
Don’t count on being considered in-state in following years.
How can you be in state for two states?
You will not be able to get instate tuition after one year of college in Arizona. Are your parents moving to Arizona? Really…that’s the only way this is going to happen!
This school is not affordable for you as an OOS student…it’s just not.
Are your parents able to pay the $42,000 additional bill? If not…I agree…this one probably needs to be put aside.
It’s actually easy to be instate for two states. Divorced parents can live in different states (my nephew had Colorado and Florida). Some states, and I believe Michigan is one, allow students who graduate from high school in that state to remain a resident even if parents move elsewhere.
I’m instate for Michigan and Georgia I have a home in both states and my mom pays taxes to both states
Just wanted to say thanks for the brutal truth haha. I figured as soon as I got the mail there wasn’t much hope but you guys confirmed it in a good way thank you!
Having a home in both states does not make you a resident of both states. Your mother is a resident of one state and a part time resident of the other. Where do you go to high school? Where does your mother work, vote, register her cars, have a driver’s license?
Being (or not being) a legal resident =/= as having (or not having) in-state tuition status.
He didn’t say he was a resident of both states. He said that he was in-state (for tuition purposes) for both states.
My mother is registered to vote in Georgia and we will have had a home there as of fall 2017
Yes for tuition purposes I’m in-state
