Out Of State Tuition and Financial aid advise?

Hi,
I have applied to the University of Arizona which has accepted me. I plan on transferring but need some clarification in regards to Financial Aid and tuition cost. I have applied for Financial Aid and saw that the OOS tuition is about 30,000. Does Financial aid help cover tuition cost, even if not all then some? If so, typically how much tuition is covered for an out-of-state student? Are there any more ways of receiving more money in order to help pay the costs through programs or grants? I am trying not to take out a large sum of loans so my debt will be minimized. If you have any alternative advise, please include such info!

Thank you for your help!

Federal aid is limited to a $5500 loan for a freshman (and maxes out at $7500 for juniors and seniors), and a Pell Grant of <$6K if your family is very low income. The vast majority of aid is provided by the School. Being OOS you stand little chance of getting any $. How much can your parents pay because they are considered the first in line for paying.

thanks for your reply. When you say the vast majority of aid is provided by the school, what does that include? Will some of the tuition be covered?

What did it say in your financial aid package?

I am still waiting to see what I am awarded. So now answer as of now

At this point, really all you can do is wait for your package.

In the meantime, don’t withdraw from your current school until you find out if this OOS public university will be affordable for you. It might not be.

State universities generally provide financial assistance for state residents only. Arizona is no exception. Although public universities sometimes offer limited merit awards to exceptionally high-achieving out-of-state students, those awards are generally available to incoming freshmen only.

I think you can expect to receive federal assistance only, and little or no assistance from the university itself.

My advice is don’t expect assistance from “programs and grants” unless you are very low income and qualify for federal money. You need to carefully plan before leaving where you are.

And the AZ legislature just did a $100m cut to our schools of higher ed.

This is going to sound harsh, but the time to be asking these questions was before you applied to the University of Arizona.

Do not expect much money from this school. You’re OOS and you’re a transfer student. You won’t be able to borrow your way, either. You can borrow 7500 if you’re a junior transfer.

This school will likely be unaffordable.

Why would this school give need based money to cover its high OOS cost??? Why would it bother to charge a high OOS cost if that meant that they had to “give away” need based aid to cover that cost? Wouldn’t that be kind of silly??
