How to get work exp.

I'm trying to get into a top MBA program but I need work experience. What's some jobs I could get when I'm just in my first year of college majoring in mis?

Bump…:.

When they say work experience they mean full-time work experience usually done AFTER college. Enjoy college and explore your interests.

Solid internships during your junior/senior year will help open some doors for decent job opportunities upon graduation. You do not just need “some” experience when applying to top MBA programs - read the profile of recently admitted classes, and you will see the average number of years working (after college) is typically several years (can be 5-10+, most require at least 2 before even applying), with average age ranges from late twenties to thirties, forties, etc. depending on their applicant pool that year. The quality of work experience matters, too. Management (exempt-level) is something to strive for.

With the current job market it may take longer to work your way up into positions that make you competitive for top MBA programs, and your undergraduate GPA and GMAT scores will carry some weight for most programs. Some of the most important things that you can work on right now are building confidence, assertiveness, public speaking skills, social skills, etc. These will help when you are networking with peers and potential employers, interviewing, trying for promotions, etc.

Some jobs that may help develop these skills include sales (esp. commissioned, as it pushes you to work harder for more money and can have higher pay rates than a typical apparel sales associate). Some examples include fine jewelry sales, electronics, appliances, etc. Also, bartending was a good option; very sociable and you learn to interact with a lot of personalities. You want to learn to interact well with different, “older” crowds (e.g., I wouldn’t recommend working for Aeropostale, where the typical customer is a teenager).
