I want to self study Psych and APHG, however I don't know where to go to sign up. My school offers neither of these courses. I asked my guidance counselor, and she said flat out that I couldn't and I have to be enrolled in the course to take the test for it. What should I do or who should I contact to take the take at neighboring schools? Sorry for yet another self studying thread.

Yes, only the school can order the test, and it costs them a rather large ($86) sum of money per test. If your county, city, or state offers a distance learning program, perhaps your guidance counselor will allow you to take that course online through the distance learning program. If you are simply interested in the topics themselves as opposed to specifically the AP tests, have you considered dual enrollment at a local community college?

If your school doesn’t offer it then they won’t let you take the exam, pretty STUPID huh? The reason they do that is mainly with bureaucratic issues. They would want the state to pay for a teacher to teach the class even though its probably easier to just self-study. Don’t you just love teacher’s unions?

The only other real option you have is to contact neighboring schools and ask if they can order the test for you so you can take it.

contact AP services, the link is below

[Contact AP - Advanced Placement Contact](<a href=“College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools”>Get the Most Out of AP – AP Students | College Board)

just call or email them and tell them what course(s) you want to take an exam in. They will set you up with the school nearest you who is planning on offering the exam. You will still have to pay for the exam, and possibly a little extra just because it isn’t your school who you are taking it at. Make sure you contact them by March 1st though.

I contacted them the other day because I was in the same situation you are. My school doesn’t offer most of the APs I want to take, so I did some research and found out about self-studying. I found that website that I put the link to, and it was very helpful. Check it out.

Hope this helps.

I contacted AP services and they sent me the information for a school that offers neither of the APs I want to self study. Should I contact that coordinator anyways or would they be of no help outside of their school? Or should I just contact AP services again sometime in January?

Hmmm that’s odd. Did you tell AP services which tests you wanted to take? Why did they give you a school that doesn’t offer the tests? I do know that when I called they told me that not all of the schools had sent in the information yet about what tests they would be giving. They said I should check back around January/February to see if another school closer to me had decided to offer the test. So yeah, check back with them in January I guess, and hopefully schools near you will have signed up to offer those tests.
