How to improve ECs?

Alright for me and for all those who are re-applying for schools for next year, I was wondering how to improve ECs? Do schools even really care how much community service your doing or do they care more your athletic achievements and stuff?

you should not being doing ECs so that you look accomplished to others

If you are interested in adding to your life, try to find activities that interest you - art, sports, school newspaper, clubs, foreign language activities, yearbook, drama, set design, chorus, band, orchestra, you know there are lots of things that one can do. If you don’t have a particular passion, maybe you will find one. It is a way to make new friends too.

If you want to do community service, try to find something that interests you. E. g. Do you like animals? Work at an animal rescue/shelter. You can help the young, the old, the poor, the sick, there are many many charities that need volunteers.

A good EC can be a help in admission, but it is not the be all and end all.

Good luck.

I’m telling you, it’s really hard to find community service outside of clubs! I wanted to volunteer some this summer, and I started looking for organizations. I found absolutely NOTHING that doesn’t either a. have a minimum age requirement of 16 or 18, b. require applications that were due in march/april/may, or c. have something to do with animals (I’m not an animal person… at all.) It’s really frustrating- people keep talking about how teenagers don’t “give back”, but there’s no opportunities!

Bamagirl-

One way get around the age restrictions is to create your own community service opportunity.

Some ideas-

-Collect books, canned good, used sports equipment, school supplies, old towels for the animal shelter, or other items at school. Or do the same at a community dance, 4H picnic, church retreat, etc… If you can find a group willing to let you piggyback your drive on their event you can ask them to help advertise the drive.
-Put up a booth at a local community event, such as your town’s 4th of July celebration, and do kiddie face painting in exchange for donations.
-Run a bake sale with proceeds going to a local organization.
-Ask the senior center if you can create centerpieces for their tables, gifts bags for mother’s/father’s day, or decorations for the center. You may not be able to work directly with their residents but many organizations welcome donations.
-Start an organization to do odd jobs such as lawn mowing for the disabled or elderly in your town. Get your friends involved so it’s more fun.
-Look around for something that needs to be done and figure out how you can do it. The sky’s the limit!

Question: Do you think it counts if you’re on the youth group board for like, a religious organization? Like your Church or Temple, for example…

Of course! I put Church youth group as one of my ECs.

Do you use the word “improve”? Why do you have to “improve” ECs? What’s a “better” EC?

You have to figure out why you’re doing this. Then, put a lot of time and effort in it. That’s it.

I’m going to a local private school next year for high school, so I’ll starting in new extracurriculars. I’m not sure to put own my 9th grade achievements or 8th grade achievements for the application.
