Hi guys,
I had taken the Oct 9th SAT, and got a 2000. 610r 690m and 700w. I guess 2000 isint such a bad score, but I am definitely not satisfied with it. So i got like 4 or 5 days left for the November 6th SAT. What is the best way to increase my total score by a 150 points? I am not sure that I can improve the CR section in just 4 days, but what can I do to improve my Math and Writing?

Writing - read silverturtles guide, and do writing sections over and over. with that, i improved my 750 writing to a 800 writing Oct with only 4 days of practice (of course i did ****loads of it tho)

Math: dont make stupid mistakes. discuss answers in bathroom if you have to, but dont get buttraped on math by stupid mistakes (if my math was 800, i would be content with a 2340)

I always feel that i have done well in math while i’m taking the test, but when the scores arrive, its always wayyyyy below what i expected. Also, its not that I dont know how to do the questions. I can do every single question, but apparently i keep making mistakes. How can I avoid making such careless mistakes? Is there an easy way out?

its called looking at peoples papers and sharing answers in the bathrooms. easy way out.

however, ive been doing a lot of math tests, and ive become quite adept at reading the tricks, so much that i have gotten 800s on the last 3 ptests i did (-0).

for math i always skip to the end and go backwards from #20 or 16 to #1. I find it easier to solve the hard questions first when i’m more focused. Also, you don’t have to worry about having spent too much time on Qs 1-10 which I usually do, checking and rechecking before moving on (bad habit).

another tip for math is to be really paranoid, especially if the questions are #16-#20. if 16-20 seem like no-brainers, then you probably missed something unless you’re a math wizard. always try to find the trap that ETS puts in their tests. circle what they’re asking for because if you partly solve something, that wrong “answer” will be an answer choice for sure.

other than that, review some obscure concepts you might not be comfortable with (data analysis/probability/algebra etc) and just do problems. Also, you have a calculator. use it. if you have a ti-89 you can take plenty of shortcuts to save time. it may be cheap, but you dont get style points on the SAT.

best of luck :)

and for your essay write the full 2 pages.
the essay graders basically grade solely based on length and fancy vocab =__=

actually no. My essay was two pages, but had none of any fancy vocabs. What I did have was a SINGLE example, except I analyzed the heck out of it. got a 12 :)

^ just a single example? I spent like 5 minutes searching within the depths of my brain for 3 examples. I just got a 9. Didnt know that you could score a 12 with just 1 example. Also, I didnt know that using fancy vocab is good on the SAT. I bet i’ll try that out this time around.

yep. i just elaborated on that example a lot. if you want, i can send u my 12 essay. or i can just post it.

Please post it. I can gain some sort of ideas from it.

I got an 11 on my essay. The best pieces of advice I can give are to quickly establish your thesis, manage your time*, and add LOTS of details. I only had 4 paragraphs (2 main examples) but put so many names, civilizations, events, and BSed statistics in that it just looked official. Also 1.75-2 pages is what you should be aiming to write.

*not managing my time properly cost me a 12 because my conclusion was almost completely illegible in order to finish in time

Gasp a 12 essay with only one example!
That’s so TIGHT
I think you should post it so we can see :D

yeah you should post it. I’ve never seen an SAT essay with just one example!

For vocabulary, I got a book with about 1,200 vocab words which either comes out on the SAT test frequently in the past or are of the same standard. Really helpful.

Should be available in almost any bookstore. Found mine near the dictionaries.

Great advice here btw, thanks! I’m bookmarking this page to help me for my SATs!

If you guys took the SAT USH, please help me answer mine! Test is in FOUR DAYS!!

As for time management, it helps me a lot if I just think of the main points of each paragraph before I write. Sounds like nothing, but helps a lot!

Beats writing it half way and realizing it’s not coherent or your ideas don’t flow. Just don’t spend TOO much time on the planning. Be simple, do it on your mind or quickly jot it down.

Scored 2300 in October. Up 150 points from June. Got the Kaplan review book and took as many math and CR sections as I could.
