How to increase one's chances of acceptance to med school?

Hi, I'm in high school and want to apply to med school after high school and I want to know what can be done to increase one's chances of acceptance into med school while in high school other than things such as volunteering. Since I'm just in high school I don't think I would be able to do any shadowing so I really don't know what to do. Thanks in advance for any help.

Start studying for the MCAT.

Since I’d be applying after high school I wouldn’t be applying to any U.S. med schools and thus wouldn’t need the MCAT. But I figured apart from the standard testing required the E.C.'s which one would need would be pretty much the same everywhere around the world.

You want a BS/MD program, or you literally want to go from HS to a foreign med school–like a Caribbean med school?

Well I would’ve liked to go to a U.S. med school (which would mean U.G. -> MS) however I’m an international (no citizen ship nor permanent residency) so it would seem my best option is to go to an international med school (not an offshore one, even though I’m almost sure that they require a bachelor’s degree too) and then take it from there seeing as though internationals have about a 1% acceptance rate into U.S. med schools and the majority of those internationals who do get accepted are Canadians since they are accredited by the same board.

Do not study for the MCAT. That would be a complete waste of time. Most study a couple of months before they take the test. Plus you haven’t even took the courses necessary for the MCAT. To increase your chances, the only thing you can do is prepare for UG.Take the highest level science courses you can (AP etc.). Nothing in high school can increase your chances for getting into med school. Just get strong in sciences and math to get ready to get a high GPA in UG.

Dwalker: I’m not applying to American med schools so I wouldn’t go to an undergraduate institution but instead go straight to med school after high school. With this in mind, are there no E.C.'s I can take to improve my chances or make myself seem like a better candidate?

Volunteer at a hospital, nursing home, health advocacy group, clinic, blood drive, ehealth careers club, etc. What country were you considering, that might aide us in helping you.

Well I am currently looking at UK, Ireland and Jamaica. I don’t really know of any other places where I wouldn’t have to learn a completely different language. If you have any other suggestions I would really appreciate it. Also, I kind of know french, but it’s definitely not up to the level yet where I can study completely in that language and have advanced lectures in it and what not.

There are several medical schools in Eastern Europe where all instruction is in English.

One I am familiar with the Jagellonian Medical College In Krakow. It’s supposedly the oldest medical school in Europe and has a good reputation. It offers MBBS and follows the US AAMC curriculum for the last 4 years of the program.

D1 was in Krakow this summer and said it’s very pleasant and pretty city, not terribly difficult to get around in and many residents speak some English.

Thanks for the suggestion WOWMom :)

OP, is your goal not to practice one day in America? I know you aren’t going to a U.S. med school, I just assumed you would pursue practicing in the U.S.

Yes, that’s my goal. Oh I just re-read your post, I misread it the 1st time. I understand what you’re saying now, thanks.

Do you know any books that I can use to read ahead or anything?

Reading ahead is not necessary. Can you take IB, AP, CIS, or courses at a local college? Thats what I meant. I believe that states require at least 2 years of college credit in order to grant a license to practice. You need more than the degree you receive from the international med school. I think you should aim for a 6 year program if you plan not to go to a UG. You can get deeply in debt from med school and still be unable to practice in the states. FYI, you may have trouble getting in str8 out of HS because of your age. I heard 21 is the age those schools take mostly. Thats why I assumed you would go to UG. You could take a gap year and try americorp or some other volunteering program.

For the med schools I have looked at they allow entry straight out of high school without mentioning any minimum age, even if they did have a minimum age it wouldn’t be anything too high such as 20 or 21 because the average age of people leaving high school is somewhere around 18 or 19 (we go up to grade 13), right? Isn’t 21 the average entering age of graduate entry med schools?

In the US? The average age of an entering med student has been steadily rising over the past 10 years. It used to be that students entered directly after undergrad—so age 21-22.

However the trend is toward accepting non-traditional students. (Students who take a gap of one or more years after graduation before beginning their professional medical education.) The average age nationally is almost 26; the median age is around 24.5.

At D1’s med school, the accepted students for the Class of 2014 ranged between the ages of 21 and 52.

^ thanks wowmom, did your D1 help you write those posts as well?

OP the best way to increase your chances is to do the things your passionate about and not give up or listen to people who tell you too. Good luck.

look at Tulane University which has a program that allows International students the opportunity to get accepted to Med School at a much higher % than most US Med Schools. Students that are accepted and complete the program do not take the MCAT

Guts-- No, D1 didn’t help me write them. The data are from AMCAS’s own figures.

Look it up yourself if you don’t believe me.
