I want to dorm all four years at college. My parents are overbearing, and they try to control everything I do from what I wear, who I'm friends with, and what activities I do in the spare time. I do not do anything questionable or bad, I don't associate myself with drugs, promiscuity, or any of that "typical college freshmen" activities. My dad denied to sign the parental rights for me to volunteer in Cambodia and it drives me insane.
I just want to be on my own, and get some experience. I've already obliged to staying local because they want me to, I cannot stand being like this any longer.

The cost of attendance of the public university I want to attend is: ($6,188 + $12,816). That is with room & board included.

If I receive the full amount for the Cal Grant and the Pell Grant, how would I pay off the $9k? Can someone explain this to me?
Please & thank you.

If the Cal Grant and Pell Grant cover all except $9K a year, you should be able to cover most of that with a $5,500 Stafford loan you will qualify for through filing the FAFSA. And then find a job to make the additional $3500. You should be able to make a good chunk of it if you get a job now and work all summer.

Is your family income low enough to get a full Pell Grant?

If your parents are that controlling, will they refuse to fill out FAFSA?

Do you know what your FAFSA EFC is? Have you used an online Net Price Calculator on a CSU website?

Why did you not go to boarding school for high school? Room and board are something YOU, as an adult will have to pay for the rest of your life, or find someone to pay for it for you. You are asking your parents to cough up money for what they can provide for you with what they already have. Can they eve afford it? Surely you are not asking tax payers to pay for your food and bed. We do that for inmates and military, and those who are truly unable to care for themselves,

You are entitled to a certain amount of financial aid, PELL if family income is very low up to $5600, but that is with a zero EFC. You need to know how much of that you are entitled to get. You can borrow $5500 from Direct Loans, but bear in mind that has to be repaid, and it’s not something to take lightly. A lot of people in deep water for Student Loans. And, yes, you will probably have to work and go to college. Frankly, if you can live with your parents, that is a $7-15K in benefits they are giving you, and ain’t no one else gonna give you that. Also if you do this now, you just might get out of college with lower loans and not have to move back home. The irony is so many of you kids are hot to leave at 18 and then pay for that decision being stuck living with parents after college because you owe so much, can’t find a job that pays enough to live independently, and no one to subsidize you. You think it sucks old sushi, now, it just gets older years later.
