How to sign up for a decal

Hi I am going to be a freshman in the fall 2009.
Right now we're in Phase I and Phase II is in the middle of July.
How do I sign up for a decal?
Do decals fulfill anything other than units?

THANKS!

Decal sign-ups usually start after the school year begins. You can check the information at decal.org but the website is currently down. Just follow the instruction for the decal that you want; you usually request a CCN from the facilitator. For now, you should wait until they update the website.

All Decals are taken P/NP and they only cover for units. You can’t really count it towards breadth requirements or prereqs. However, if you have one or two more units to reach the minimum amount of units, it’s good to take one for interest.

Do other colleges have things similar to decals?

so can i sign up for around 11 units total in phase 2 and then wait to sign up for decal later?

Yes. The only risk is that if the Decal does not let you in, then you need a safe plan B to get to minimum units for your college. Some Decals have you email the instructor and they will assure you that you have a place, as they are in strict order of request. Some give you the CCN and you just register for it during phase 2 or as soon as you know it, since the number of seats is managed by telebears. Some have random drawings or other methods to allot seats, which only happen during the first week that the DeCal meets - these very high demand DeCals are the ones where there is real risk that you won’t get in.

Some will sign up for their college’s minimum during phase 2, with a course they plan to jettison if they get into the DeCal. Some have alternative DeCals that are assured of entry as a fallback. Some just gamble.

I don’t think DeCals are that competitive to sign up for. Yes, the big major ones like the Harry Potter DeCal attract more students than they can hold. Usually, the only thing you can do now is email the instructor to get onto the priority list. With the DeCals I’ve taken, they gave out the CCNs the second class meeting (around the second or third week of class). Just be sure to email now to get on the priority list. Some DeCals are first come, first serve. Some others give tests to wittle down to the class maximum.
