How to stand out even though my gpa isn't great

Cal Poly SLO has been my dream school since I visited a few semesters back and fell in love with the campus and town. I am currently attending a community college in California and I’m looking to transfer from here to Cal Poly this coming school year. I’m starting to get worried as it gets closer to admission because I know Cal Poly is a very competitive school and I’m not sure if I make the grade. I currently have a 2.9 GPA and I’m working to get it up to a 3.0 before I transfer, I will have recommendations and E.C, but I don’t know if that is enough. I came here to see if it was worth applying with my GPA and if anybody had any recommendations to make my application more competitive.

Thanks in advance for your help

What major? A 3.0 GPA is most likely not high enough to get accepted into CPSLO’s College of Engineering, but I’m not familiar with the other majors.

No stats posted for 2016 Transfers but depending upon your major, a 3.0 may be a little low.

My Major is Anthropology, I assume a little less competitive than engineering?

@Sopro15 , you are correct. It should be much less competitive than engineering.

Glad to hear that, according to gumbymom’s link it seems that my gpa is a little bellow the average still but I feel hopeful now that I stand a chance if I put forward a really good application.

Please be sure to apply elsewhere too.

Colleges publish something called the “Common Data Set”. Google it for SLO and you’ll find that SLO admits basically on just the numbers; GPA and SAT scores for freshman and GPA for transfers. So, putting “forward a really good application” is getting a good GPA. From SLO’s website, the 2015 data shows that for the liberal arts department, there were 1999 applicants and 385 were admitted. The GPA stated for those admitted was 3.39 but it doesn’t state the range. I’d definitely apply elsewhere too.
