My friends who took the class had to self-study it to pass the AP test, because their teacher wasn’t that great. But the class itself was super easy (at least at my school).
They paid attention in class and took notes, and crammed for all the quizzes and tests. They ended up with 99’s in the class.

I always used online flashcards, putting the image on one side and the artist on the other. Half the battle is just memorizing who did what.

My teacher actually lets us use our notes on each unit test. We take SERIOUS notes from Gardner’s Art ed. 13 (our text) – I draw a simplistic depiction of every work, noting the artist/date/materials/period – and are allowed to reference them, as he almost always gives very specific questions. If we know the material well enough, however, we don’t need to use them so much. We have an essay for each test, too – usually about period-specific topics and the history or religious influence. In short: a lot of reading and diligent notetaking, but I have a 98% grade in the class.
