How to thwart Myopia and not wear glasses

Hey guys... I would like to talk about an issue that affects many of us teens and collegebound students.

One day in math class while I was taking notes, this kid who's not especially smart comes next to me and asks to read my notes. He says he can't see from the blackboard. I almost felt pity for him. :(

I want to know how one can be smart, go through college with an education without screwing up their eyes. No glasses or contacts. I see plenty of people who are smart and are in good colleges, without the need to wear glasses or contacts. My vision is borderline myopic, but I don't have glasses yet.

We as humans were not mean to depend on a vision aid. Our ancestors were hunters-gatherers who NEEDED distance vision to survive.

I need some advice on how to avoid myopia and other eye problems! If you protect your eyes now, you won't regret it ten or twenty years from now when you look back on your life. I know some of this depends on genetics, but I also know that the majority of this can be controlled by our actions. We just need to find a way. This is also for those of you who are like nerds but do not want to LOOK like them. I believe there is a way!

So far, I have found this possible remedy: http://www.doctorrelation.com/make%20yourself%20tough/make4.php VERY reliable source - also check pg. 14 if u have allergies/hayfever or asthma)

I've also considered eye exercises like the ones in the Bates method.

Please share your experiences and solutions.... ;)

...

I wear contacts. It's no big deal. I get up, I put in my contacts, I live, I take out my contacts, I sleep. I'm still happy. No major changes in my life since I started wearing them.

And, get this: I don't need to look like a nerd with glasses because of the invention of contacts. They're amazing. Frankly, I'd rather have to put in contacts everyday than live the rest of my life with semi-good (don't make fun of my grammar) vision. I can see clearly (pardon the pun) and I look fine.

ugh.. this has happened to me recently (im a soph) form studying too hard.

i used to have 20/20 vision.. now i have trouble reaing large words 10 ft away after a long study sesion.

try bates method.. aldous hux supposively cured his near-blindness..

and take frequent breaks

i should take my own advice

Contacts are amazing! My parents both have terrible vision, and mine is even worse. Glasses slip and fog up, and when I wear them I have very limited peripheral vision. I would definetly go for contacts if you ever need some kind of vision-aid.

I wouldn't worry too much about your eyes because a lot of the time they get worse simply with age, and that's just life. If you are still paranoid though, there are some obvious things you can do. Don't sit three inches in front of the television, and read in well-lit areas.

I got glasses in third grade and never wore them...by the time I was in sixth grade, my vision was -4.50 in both eyes and I couldn't even see people's faces from across the room. Then I was saved by contacts.

Quite possibly true - but they didn't need close vision nearly as much. Little reading, little close, fine motor work. They didn't need to shift from distance to near vision, changing focus frequently, as you do when you take notes in a large classroom or read while watching TV. The uses of our eyes has changed significantly while the anatomy and physiology haven't.

And I'm not sure that we can change that much.

I wear contacts. They're comfortable, never bother me, and work all day. I wore glasses for a few years but have had contacts for about 4 now...they're really not that bad.

I agree that anyone who does not have eye problems should do whatever they can to prevent it - but a lot of it is genetic. It's not just people randomly ruining their vision. My vision randomly took a sharp turn when I turned thirteen, but it's been steady since then, and a few other family members had the same issue.

Anyway, you can do all the eye exercises in the world and still have your vision go bad, and you can do nothing and keep perfect vision...there's little that you can do. Good luck, though.

"I want to know how one can be smart, go through college with an education without screwing up their eyes. No glasses or contacts."

u felt pity? how about those of us who were born myopic? and wore glasses starting at 6 =/

um, I suggest you get off these boards and away from the computer... Spending too much time on the computer and video games causes a lot of the visions problems we have today.

I always wear my contacts. pretty much 15 hours a day.
I've needed glasses/contacts since I was 9 (that's when I got them... I probably needed them a while before that...).

I LOVE my glasses- I like the fact that people assume I'm smart :-)

My vision is horrible. I have trouble reading notes on a whiteboard from less than 10-15ft away.

I have glasses, but I never wear them to school (usually only while driving). Contacts would be nice, but they're too expensive to bother. Plus I don't care to put crap in my eyes.

It's a good thing I'm an auditory learner.

It just recently struck me how many young people need glasses. Almost all my friends wear glasses, or at least contacts. I don't need either. :-

This makes me laugh. I have conjunctivitis (I though that was a 3rd graders illness!) so I've been wearing my glasses to school instead of my trusty Freshlooks. My lenses are so thick they extend past the frame! (When I first got them, my eye technician was like, I tried my best, but you've got some bad vision!) People keep begging me to try them on, and when they do, they look like they're going through a time warp or something. I really really reallly hope my vision doesn't get too much worse...this is embarrasing. I'm def. getting lasik when I turn 20ish! Even if they can't correct my vision completely, it's better than having to put 20/800 on all my health forms!
