To those of you who have been through this...are there things you can do as a deferred student to up your chances of acceptance at U of M? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I’ve been deferred as well, so I called someone from admissions and they told me to try to earn the best grades I can for the next semester and send other ACT/SAT scores if applicable. Other than that, there isn’t much you can do.

My advice: get really good grades and keep in touch with the admissions counselor assigned to your area. Let him or her know why you want to go to Michigan, and check in regularly. Tell him or her what you’ve been up to. Mention any awards you’ve won recently or things you’ve accomplished. It also might be a good idea to submit one additional letter of rec from a UM alum or a teacher. This lets him or her know you are still very interested, and he or she will remember your name when the admissions committee begins reviewing your app again.

I agree with ngeeze1. My admissions counselor said don’t worry about sending them extra information because you think they may be busy. It shows interest! If you act like you don’t want to go to this university, they’ll gladly give the opportunity to someone who does. Be sure to get to know the admissions counselors and send new, interesting information. Best of luck!

Work hard on your grades!!

I was deferred but then I got my acceptance after I sent my mid year report.
