I skimmed through some of these posts before realizing they were from last year and this last one is a new bump.

Don't stress too much about this. I'd hand-write it on if it's not there already. And I don't remember stressing about the common app number--more about the student's name. FWIW, at our hs the individual guidance counselors and teachers send in as many copies of their letters as you give them stamped/addressed envelopes for (or un-stamped + $1 per).

Request the recommendations early, get the rest of your common app done, submit it, and then follow up with the school to make sure they have all the pieces. And r-e-l-a-x.

i asked a teacher to write me a recommendation letter. since i have a couple of schools that use the common app, he told me to indicate the common app that he is submitting online.
how does that work ?
thanks in advance for the help

I’m a little confused about some aspects of the common app. In the instructions it says something about only have to submit teacher recommendations if the college requests it but the only thing the college has on their application page is a link to the common app or at this point the preview. Should I send them anyway?
Also the instructions say I have to complete the mid year, final report and secondary school forms as well. They appear to be the same form and I’m not sure exactly what they are for? And do I really have to fill out all of them in addition to the application?
I’m just not sure. Please help.

2010-11 common app is not going live until August 1st. I’m not sure what’s up there now but you might want to wait until next week to really dig in. (And FWIW–your guidance counselor should be able to help you with common app questions.) (Or come back to CC–lots of good info here!)

On CC go to the Forum titled “College Admissions” and at the top of that page you will find a link for “Common Application”. You will find a lot of info there to help you!

This thread is very old and a lot of the information is out of date.

For example, teachers can now upload their recommendation to the common app site. Then when you submit your application to each individual school, you can select which recommendations are sent to that school. No need for copying, stamped envelopes, etc.

@motherbear so are you saying i can ask teacher a b c for commonapp schools and they upload the document to commonapp. so for harvard i can have a + b and columbia i can have a+c ??? how does this work? can u explain cuz i dont want to ask all three and sent all 3 recommendations to a college. like once u invite them do they send their rec to common app “storage center” and you get to “pull” those recs out and put them in for every school?

I want to send my PE teacher an invite to Cornell University ONLY. But once I invite an official using the commonapp, the official is placed on all my commonapp listed colleges.
Can I let my PE teacher only send her recommendation to Cornell through the commonapp without sending to any of my other colleges?

The official is on an available list on commonapp but you would still have to specify by each college which of the officials will be providing recommendations. Click on the college… then recommendations… then select the teacher. When my D applied last year, she selected which teachers she wanted for which school. She then provided her teachers with a list of the schools she wanted them to give recommendations to along with addresses and deadlines. You should communicate with your PE teacher directly and not assume commonapp wil do that for you.

I have a question regarding the mixing of online/paper forms –
I am applying to the University of Miami and to American University through CommonApp. Both websites seem to suggest that the teacher recs can be physically mailed and the rest of the application can be submitted online. However, the CommonApp websites seems to suggest that you can either do everything through paper or everything online (it doesn’t mention school forms directly, though).

Can I have the teachers mail in the forms? It would be far, far easier this way as they are college professors.

My daughter’s high school requires all students to give their selected teachers a copy of the common app teacher rec form along with a stamped addressed envelope for each school to which they are applying. It is also suggested to include in the envelope or request the teacher to write on the letter the student’s name, DOB, common app ID and the name of the HS.

Some colleges require that all paperwork be sent the same way so if you are using the Common App the teacher LOR’s need to be sent electronically as well.

Again, I would caution that this is a very old thread and some of the information may be outdated. The instructions on the Common App site, along with any instructions disseminated by your high school, should answer most questions. Since procedures often vary from high school to high school, especially with the use of Naviance e-docs, it’s best to confirm answers with your high school guidance department as regards teacher and counselor recommendations and submission of transcripts and school profiles.
