How to write a "Why..<College>" Essay?

I've been getting mixed messages about what I should write for these things. One of my primary choices for going to some of these schools is simply because I think I can get in, and also some because I've been given good recommendations from people I know.

For instance: the University of Miami was recommended to me by a doctor who I trust.

Would I write about this, or what is the college looking for with these essays?

Research the college’s USPs. Then focus on what you’re presenting as your interests and future goals. And find the parallels between the two. But please don’t say you want to apply cuz you can get in!

In my day, students applied to 3-4 schools, max. Each year that number rises. It is not uncommon for a student to apply to 12 or more. So one aspect of the “why @@@” needs to be an illustration of your knowledge of the school, it’s student body, the campus vibe, etc. It helps the admissions people get an idea if you are serious about the school, a d your desire. It also helps gauge “fit” for them. I am sure Dartmouth gets essays every year describing how much the student loves cities, and I am sure nyu gets some saying the student loves the outdoors. Oh, and Harvard is not spelled y-a-l-e. So craft an essay to show your knowledge of the school, why you are a good fit tot he student body, what you will add to the campus community, and impress upon them that the school is one of your top pics. If you are legacy or have ties to the school in some way, that’s the place for it.
