How to write an email to a teacher

I think my teacher messed up my grade, but I don't know the best way to email her without looking like a grade-grubber.

I understand. I was going to email my Law Studies teacher about why my final grade was a B, when a week earlier, she printed out a paper saying my final grade was an A. But that might have been before the final exam, so I didn't bother.

Teachers makes mistakes all the time. My mom is a teacher and she gets emails about grades frequently; it doesn't bother her at all.

Just ask your teacher to double check your grade because it didn't seem correct to you.

Dear Teacher of FredFredBurger,

Upon closer look at my marks in your class, I noticed a mathematical error when you averaged out my grade. Can we please meet and discuss this? I would appreciate it greatly, for I respect your teaching and I am sorry for your having made a mistake.

If you would like, you could double check your mathematics now. And, then perhaps even correct your innocent mistake online through the school grading system. Please e mail me back whenever you have the time. And, have a nice day.

yours truly,

FredFredBurger

LOL

As long as you are polite and stand your ground a bit, then you will be alright.

LOL, that sounds so formal. When I email my teachers, I get right down to it. :D

^Lol, for some reason, I got this message out of it: "Dear teacher, I think that you suck at math and therefore calculated my grade wrong. I would like to talk about you because I actually calculated it right. Thanks!"

... But maybe I'm just messed up.

Still, I wouldn't send that email unless I know for certain that my grade is calculated wrong.

OR "I'm not sure I understand how you arrived at my final grade. Could we arrange an appointment so that we could discuss this? I think there may have been an arithmetic error."

^ go for this one instead of the Dear Teacher, you can't do basic arithmetic.

yeah idk about that first letter, unless you're 100% sure that the grade is wrong. I think you'd otherwise be betteroff with something like this:

Dear [Teacher],
How are you?
When reviewing my grades, I seem to have calculated an average which is different from the one that you have indicated on my report card. I understand that this may be a miscalculation on my part or perhaps my mistunderstanding of your grading policy, but I'd appreciate it if we could set up a time to review my grades and work out the calculations together. I think this might also help my understanding of how you calculate averages and may allow us to avoid this situation in the future.
Thank you for your time,

If you're not fully sure, you don't even need to bring up the fact that she messed up your grade.

Dear ____________,

I was wondering if you had a final report of the assignments and examinations that I did last semester. It would be very helpful if you could e-mail me a copy of it. Thank you for your time.

Your student,

When you do find the mistake, use the letters written above.

..you really don't need to sound like a robot.

Dear Teacher,

When I received my report card, I noticed a discrepancy in my grade for your class as opposed to what I was under the impression it would be. I'd appreciate it if you could meet with me sometime to take a look and make sure the grade is listed accurately. Please let me know when you're available. Thanks so much! Have a good night/day.

--Name

Even if he/she is 100% wrong, telling him that will do more harm than good. Act confused and apologetic, it works so much better. Face to face it if you think you sound too laid back or too formal in email.

Agreed- act nice, maybe a little confused. My health teacher lost a big assignment of mine for some reason, claimed I didn't put my name on it. While I'm not terribly concerned with my health grade, I do hate not earning credit for work I did. Here's the email I sent her.

Dear Mrs. ----,
I was just checking my grades on Powerschool and I discovered that I have a zero for the newsletter. I'm just wondering if this is a mistake or if my newsletter got misplaced somehow, because I'm sure I turned it in. If something has happened to it, I can definitely bring an additional copy to school tommorow.
Thanks,

She just emailed me back saying I probably didn't have my name on it or something (possible, but not like me). And then the grade just magically showed up. So the best thing to do is work with them- I remember this same health teacher getting really ****ed off when she got three emails from the same student about why she had 0s when the teacher had already said she couldn't make them up.

Well, good luck to you. ^^

dear sir/ma'am,

I have reason to believe that there has been some kind of mistake with my grade. It is my firm belief that my grade is lower (or higher; depending on your situation) that it should have been.
Therefore I urdge you to look over it once more in order to make sure that no mistake was made.

Thank you for your co-operation.

you might want to start with something like:
"I think that you are the best teacher ever. I love your teaching methods and I think that you are so awesome" ---to get on his or her good side.
jk

keep it short and simple. Don't put too much useless stuff in it
good luck.

If it's higher, don't say anything. :D

______(Teacher)

The grade you assigned me seems different than what I thought it was. Can you tell me what assignments I missed?

Thanks,

Thats what my email would look like.

can I ask why you want to send him/her an e mail? Why not just ask in person?

I doubt that a teacher would take that very well.

Yeah, I should have said that I live in the South. In the South we are super polite. And, you learn early on to be super polite while still standing your ground. In my example letter, I should have stated: "Bless your heart" in there somewhere.

Tell you folks one thing, though...

I understand that anyone can make a mistake about most anything in this life.A fair portion of ones life is making the occasional mistake and learning from it.

But, with all of the technology now a days- one would think that a professor or teacher could average out the grades correctly with no problem. Gosh. I feel sorry for folks who had their teacher or professor make a grading error.

Are you confident there is a mathematical error? Or is it simply because the grade wasn't what you expected?

Thanks for all the responses! I already spoke with my teacher and the same problem had occured with others. My grade is in the process of being fixed now. Thnx again!

dont email them

i would collect all of my graded work and take it to them to show how to do the math.....one time i had to explain to my teacher how to calculate the grade based on their scale
