How to write the SAT essay faster?

I received a 7 on my essay for the may SAT. Thankfully I had a good MC subscore, so I ended up with a 650. I'd like to improve my essay to at least a 9 or higher, but I just don't see how to write a 4 to 5 paragraph essay in 25 minutes; I was only able to write my 2nd (out of 3rd) paragraph with only 5 minutes remaining.

Another quick question: on my SAT, I got 620 CR, 650 W, and 670 M. What can I do to raise all my scores into the 700’s (besides the BB; I’m saving the tests)?

Besides USE the BB*

For the essay, create your own personal generic first paragraph. One that you can use for all essays by changing the ideas.

That way you can automatically write your first paragraph without wasting time.

@Preply Could you please give me a list of things I should cover in my 1st paragraph? Thanks!

Use TWO examples, not three to support your argument. I have scored a 10 and 11 on essays that only used two main examples. Although including three example can lead to higher scores, and in theory, shouldn’t hurt you, it takes away time that could be spent on the rest of your essay. As long as the two examples you include are thorough and well-developed there is really no need for 3 examples.

In the weeks before you take the test, put together a short list of quality examples (not generic, heavily repeated ones such as MLK, Lincoln, Gatsby, etc, UNLESS you use them in an abstract manner or have a very unique viewpoint on them) that can be used in the context of many SAT essay topics. Form somewhat of an outline for your essay including your best examples so that on test day, all you have to do is tweak what you already have.

The key to a high scoring, time- efficient essay is absolutely practice and preparation. Good luck!

The function of the first paragraph is to be an introduction to the rest of your essay. It is up to you how you want to start your essay; there is no prerequisite. Write a format and stick with it.
