How was Scholars Day?

We are OOS/NY, and visited with my son 3 weeks ago, so couldn't get to Scholars Day this past weekend. How was it? Did it help you make your decision either way?

My son is still undecided where to go.

we loved it and my DD is completely convinced she is very much looking forward to being a Gamecock this August. It was my DH and DS’s first time seeing the campus and they really liked it too. Still can’t get over what the HOnors Residence Hall is like!

Hope2help…must be nice to have a decision made…congratulations…you didn’t happen to see the inside of Capstone did you? We didn’t see Capstone dorm when we visited. Wish we had.
What dorm is honors?

I thought USC did a very nice job with Scholars Day. This school has gone from a fall-back safety to my D’s #1 or #2 choice. We saw the Capstone dorm and were impressed. Nice sized rooms, all suites. Great little cafe on the first floor. Not quite up to par with Honors, but a very close 2nd choice. South Tower was a great option as well.

Overall, I thought it was a good program. I skipped the lunch, because the student was only supposed to have one guest (both DW and I went), but that seemed to be the weakest part of the day. I went up to Russell House and got Chick-fil-a, I think I got the better deal. :)

The campus looked incredible, all the large bushes are in bloom, just amazing.

The Capstone dorm rooms were some of the largest I have seen, really nice. Columbia Hall was ok, Maxcy was so-so, Preston was nice and very centrally located, South tower had awesome views if you get on the upper floors on the south or west side.

They told us that South Tower was going co-ed next year - the top half would be guys, the bottom half girls.

DD is still trying to decide between SC and Clemson.

Sorry, didn’t see Capstone…we only toured HOnors Residence Hall as supposedly DD is guaranteed living there at least for next year. It does feel really good to have her made decision and with such generous scholarships, now we can go on about enjoying the rest of her senior year. Good luck to all with the decision making process.

My hub and son attended and they seemed to think it was a worthwhile trip. They did tour Capstone - they both found it underwhelming. Hub said it was “old and tired”. Son said it looked pretty cramped. Hmmm… They went by St. Thomas More and met the priest, Father Marcin. Said he seemed like a good guy. We still haven’t visited NC State or Mercer U - the other 2 schools my son is interested in. I’m pretty sure he’ll end up going to SC.

I went to scholar’s day with my dad. I loved USC, Columbia, and the event itself. Everyone was so nice and friendly. It was a shame Dr. Pastidies couldn’t speak with us. We had a lovely campus tour and got to see everything we wanted to. Every single flower, bush, and tree was blooming and that was spectacular.

I loved Capstone house. The rooms are HUGE. Bigger than any dorms i’ve seen at UF and Vandy. Sharing a bathroom with 3 other guys instead of 60 is a huge plus too. I enjoyed the Capstone presentation. I can’t wait to get to know Dr. Hickey and the other mentors. I can’t wait to go skydiving with other capstone scholars.

I think the location of Capstone is awesome for me. I plan on double majoring in International business and finance, with a german minor. Capstone is across the street from both the business school and liberal arts school and has a dining hall in the lobby.

I also enjoyed the business presentation. It was great to hear other students and their experiences. Scholars’ day really sealed the deal for me and both my parents. I can’t wait to be a gamecock.

And also, USC’s campus is pretty small (which i think is nice). Its about 1/4th the size of UF in Gainseville.

NC7777-skydiving?? Yikes-you better check with your parents about that first! Only kidding, congratulations on your decision. My son is still undecided-guess he will have to make a choice soon!

I do hope he chooses SC, I really like it there.

Honestly the pen that they gave us was god awful. It wouldn’t write for anything. And to think I paid 15 dollars to attend their Scholars Day. Unbelievable. No class and pure disrespect for my penmanship. I am calling them tonight and getting my money back. Not a good way to entice students to the University.

Huh. I guess they only charged the trolls $15.

Yep, they’re easily recognized these days despite their valiant efforts, even by University staff. Just too many trolls anymore. Takes all the fun out of it.

NC7777 - your impressions were the same my son had, and he is currently a freshman triple major, Int. Business, Finance, and German. Dr.Hickey is awesome! Last August during move in he helped us move our son in, carrying belongings up to the 6th floor of Capstone. But for a man who has scaled the seven peaks, that was nothing. Seriously, he is advisor to our older daughter who is a nursing major in the honors college and is the real deal. You, and your parents, will never regret becoming Gamecocks. Make sure they plan on attending Parent’s Weekend next September. Congrats and good luck!
