How Well Does MAC1447 Prepare you for MAC2311?

I am currently enrolled in MAC2311 in my first semester with Kozinski, and after one week I'm feeling pretty defeated. I took pre-calc my sophomore year in high school, stat my junior, and no math my senior, so I am fairly unprepared. I did receive a 78% on the ALEKS, which means I should be ready, but I'm struggling through most of the homework problems.

Though many people are telling me to tough it out until the real calc 1 begins, not precalc review (which is transparently much harder than calc 1), I am seriously considering dropping into MAC1447.

As a prospective engineer I don't want to do this, but I think it's probably necessary. What I am worried about though, is if I'll complete 1447, get back into 2311, and have the same problem. Has anyone taken the two courses sequentially? And if so, what was your experience after a semester of pre-calc? If someone has been in my same circumstance, dropping from 2311 to 1477 and climbing back up, that would be perfect.

Any help is appreciated,

Herp, I meant 1147. Sorry about that.

the hardest part, by far, for 2311 is the pre-calc trig. if you don’t have at least an ok grasp on trig and the like, you will probably get ****ed. as i went through the calc sequence, i always regretted how bad my fundamental pre-calc was.

so i recommend going back if you think you need it. take an extra summer class, preferably at a community college near your hometown if you can, to catch up.

Kozinski is very tough. Why do you think that they only give him to the engineers, who are usually better at math/calc?! His professor evaluations are pretty negative about everything. I think he gets better or you get used to him as time goes on. You have a long time to drop the class after drop/add----nearly Thanksgiving, I think. But, try your hardest…try to find a study partner from your lecture or discussion class…use the free tutoring center in the back of Broward hall dorm and use tutoring zone even if it costs a bit of money. My son had him Fall 2010, and made it through…if you go to math.ufl.edu, they also have some math tutors if you need help beyond Tutoring Zone (but you have to pay for tutors too). Good luck!

There is a group of people on Facebook (fellow engineering friends of mine) who are forming study groups. Look for Calc with Kozinski

Yes…I found the group on Facebook (my S’s gf is also having a lot of trouble with Kozinski)…Under Groups----you can find it as–Kozinski Calculus 1 Fall 2011
