I’m currently on academic probation. I’m taking four classes this semester worth 13 credits in total. I’m not doing so well in one of my classes and I’m planning on withdrawing from the class before the last day to drop a class with a “W”. I also receive full financial aid from Pell and Tap. However, if I drop the class I would be taking 10 credits which doesn’t qualify me for the financial aid. I don’t know how it will affect my financial aid status. Will I have to pay back the money if I drop the class? or Will I no longer receive financial aid for the next semester? I’m so confused.
I tried to contact my school’s financial aid office and they are of no help. My advisors have no clue either.
Please help
You probably will have to pay it back. Go to the FA office and ask for help. Maybe you can take an incomplete and make up the class in the summer? They might have other ideas, but it may just be best to hunker down and study to bring up your grades. Meet with the teachers, go to the office hours, get a tutor.
Talk to your financial aid office before you do anything else. It might be that there is a drop dead date when you don’t have to pay back the portion of the Pell. I’m not sure what happens with TAP.
Find out before you do anything else.
Also, find out about your schools Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) guidelines. If you don’t complete a certain %age of the courses for which you register…with satisfactory grades, your financial aid for future terms could be affected.

I will be calling my financial aid office tomorrow. Tomorrow is actually the last day to drop any class without a W on the transcript. I can’t find a date when I don’t have to pay back Pell. And I’m not sure what SAP is. I don’t mind paying back the money but I’m just scared that Financial Aid might not cover for my tuition in the future
perhaps there’s a Pass or No Pass option you can switch a class to; where you need just a minimum to pass; and you could keep your aid?
SAP is Satisfactory Academic Progress. Each school sets its own SAP requirements. But basically it means you must complete…with acceptable grades…a certain %age of the courses for which you actually register. If you fall below, that percentage, your financial aid can be suspended until you meet the SAP requirement at your school.
So…esoecially if you have failed any courses in your first term…this could affect you. A dropped course is the same as a failed course as far as SAP is concerned…you didn’t pass the course for, which you registered.
So…you need to find this out too…for your school. Financial aid office should, know their SAP requirement and should be able to tell you if you will not meet it by dropping or not passing this course.
