What happens when I drop a course?

I am a freshman in college and I have been having trouble with a computer science course lately. I am thinking about dropping it but I want to know more about what happens in the long run. By dropping this course, I will have less than 12 credits required to be a full time students(if I am correct). What will happen to my financial aid, both the TAP and Pell Grant for this semester and in the next semester? Does the letter grade of a W indicate anything bad when I drop the course?

If you fall below 12 credits both your tsp and pell will be reduced. If you have received your refund already, you will end up owing and may have to repay the monies. In addition you could possibly end up owing your school for tuition and fees if your less than full time TAP/pell does not cover your tuition and fees. If you owe the college money, it could be a challenge registering for the spring term

Go talk to your FA department before you make any decision.

Try to bring your grade up before it’s the last day to drop a class with a W. When is that date?

Find out if the school offers tutoring. Ask the prof or TA for help.

How it affects your aid NOW depends on your school’s policies. In addition to that, though, you have to consider how it will affect you in the long run. Satisfactory Academic Progress regulations require you to complete a certain percentage of the courses you begin in order to keep aid. Ask about that, as well.

I have not been notified whether or not my grade is low because I haven’t taken the course’s midterm yet, but I feel as if I am going to have trouble with the class. That is why I want to drop it before I go too far. However as of now, I have completed everything that has an factor in determining my grade. Thanks for the help, I’ll check in with a few counselors and the financial aid office first!

Also ask about if any classes start in October. Some school will have classes that start 2nd half pf the semester. Maybe you could find an easier one to offset dropping the computer class.
