I got accepted into the Gabelli School of Business via Early Action with an intent on accounting and paid my deposit on December 31. Thus, I'm undergraduate and not even a freshmen at Fordham yet, but decided long ago to attend for Fall 2014 and have 0 regrets for choosing so early.

However, I would like to now internally transfer from Gabelli to the Fordham College at Rose Hill with an intent on an English major. How would this work? The only information I've been able to find online regarding transferring at Fordham is current-first-semester-freshmen transfers and external transfers into Fordham.

I don't understand how transferring from Gabelli to Rose HIll without even starting my days at Fordham works. Could someone help out? Who to email? Who to talk to?

-- Also, since the deadline May 1st has past and I've already paid my deposit, would asking to transfer between their colleges jeopardize my acceptance into Fordham University? FYI, I'm commuting.

Well you should definitely e-mail someone ASAP. I don’t go to RH so I don’t know, but try e-mailing the freshman dean for RH. The deans assigned to each year know a lot of stuff. It won’t affect your acceptance.

Worst case scenario is you might have to do the first semester at Gabelli.

This happens every year so don’t worry about it! It won’t jeopardize your acceptance. Call admissions and they will get you on the right path. You want to get this taken care of before first semester bc there are slight variations between the RH and Gabelli core.

She’s the dean for internal-transfers for Rose Hill. But since I’m just an incoming freshmen, should I email her, or just call the Office of Admissions?

You are officially admitted and now enrolled at Fordham. Congrats. But you are in the interegnum before you are matriculated. I think, but dont know for certain, that Dean Stone handles matriculated students transfers. I could be wrong about that. I would start with Office of Admissions, and do so by calling them and asking them the procedure.

On one level, doing so early enhances your situation and gets it done before you start. On the other hand, dont make a hasty decision. Going from accounting to english is a big decision. Some students major/minor to fulfill their interests. Also the core requirements at Gabelli and FCRH are designed to give a broad perspective and introduce you to subjects and departments. Some students recognize “a mistake” early and make a change; others dont realize that mistake until later.

From a job perspective accounting is a more certain career path and the need is always growing. English majors have to find a Phd program (another 5-7 years likely) or go into a business/industry that welcomes a strong writing capacity. Liberal arts students can do very well in business. They just have to be creative, flexible and fairly aggressive chasing jobs.

Every year a number (not sure how many) change from FCRH to Gabelli or vice versa. Its not generally a big problem, anecdotally. But starting early may help you.

Switching from Accounting to English is quite a change, and leaving Gabelli is another big change, as the core requirements change. You must be a talented writer, as you are considering English as a major. Here is my suggestion: consider ANOTHER business major that builds upon your obvious desire to write and express yourself. I would suggest Marketing with a Communications and Media specialization.(perhaps minor in English?) You will still need to take the core Gabelli classes, but your writing ability is absolutely necessary for the Marketing and Comm/Media major. You could specialize in PR/Advertising (now called Integrated Marketing) and get a job as a CREATIVE WRITER in an ad agency.

I worked at Leo Burnett and McCann, and I can tell you a good Copy Writer is highly appreciated and get compensated well, with a strong career track in the company.
Something to think about.

BTW, my dad wanted me to be an Accounting major, but fought the good fight and haven’t looked back since!!!

sovereigndebt, do you mind if I message you? I’ve seen you around these boards a lot and you are clearly well-informed.

Sure…but I am no authority, just been around the block a bit at Fordham. :-)
