How would you know if you get off the waitlist?

If you get accepted from the waitlist, how will you find out? Will college call you or just mail the acceptance letter to you?

Depends on the school, I guess. I know two students in previous years who received telephone calls.

Do colleges first ask you if you are still interested and then accept you? Do they just accept you and you decide whether or not to enroll?

I don't understand the waitlist. If you are accpeted off of a waitlist, wouldn't that be after May 1? Wouldn't you have already committed to a college by then? Or do you just hope that you get in off the waitlist and don't commit to any other college?????

And that indeed is the catch. You must send a, most often, non-refundable deposit to some school before May 1. If you get off the waitlist and make a new choice then you lose your deposit. ($200, $300, $400 ?) When a waitlist arrives it usually contains information about that school's policy. Our student received a phone call offering her a place at the school. You need to be ready though, the school typically wants an answer within a week if not sooner.

I recently sent a waitlist follow-up letter, but I am no longer interested in that school. So, if I get off the waitlist and refuse to enroll, will college think I'm lying and just want to get in?

If you refuse to enroll, then they'll go to the next person on their list. They don't care. They know that loyalties change.

and also since its non-binding, they cant say anything about it...

Apparently some colleges want the decision on the phone on thew spot, so be ready... If u live abroad, then u prolly wont get a call :)
