Howard BS/MD 2014

@princesssher96‌ In email or mail?

We too received letter in mail today. California. Asian. Any details on interview process, seats? etc.,

So when is the interview…?.. ha… I am worried whether mail will come after the interview day :(

interviews are on May 2,7,14

I have not received the letter yet. I am in Australia and I expect that if candidates in the US received on 4/15, I expect it sometime next week. Unbelievably, Howard rejected to send the status by e-mail although I am overseas. May not have time to fly in for the interview…so it is probably a gonner!!! for me. Good luck to all other people who made it.

Wow… so even if we get an interview, we need to get flight ticket in less than ten days?.. can’t we just ask them on the phone? This is so frustrating :(

Um… I got an interview… well I applied to BS/DDS program to start with… but they say interview will be on the first week of the class; that’s like… in September, lol.

How many of those ‘interviewed’ actually gets in to the school? Is it worth going here instead of BU and UOP accelerated dental programs… just because of scholarship?

So how are you guys preparing for the interview???

Hey everyone, I contacted the preprofessional office yesterday to ask when we would find out about acceptances. They said that it would be through mail which will be sent out on Monday, May 19th.

@princesssher96 Thank you for posting the update. We are also awaiting. Eagerly. Interviews went on till 14th. How many attended interview on the day you went?

Does anyone know if this is a guaranteed program (i.e as long as academic conditions are met)? If not, what are the advantages of this one over say, going to a regular 4 year pre-med program?

Let us say that you are selected into the first stage of BS/MD and after two years you meet the academic requirements. At this point, let us say that your interview is not as strong as say a traditional student, would Howard give you some preference over them - is there some assurance there?

If not, then what happens? Do you complete the 4 years under graduate? Or, since you have obtained 80 credits, and only 96 credits are required for an undergraduate degree (I am guessing 4 subjects per semester times 3 times 8), you complete the 16 credits in third year and re-apply to the Howard MD program? It gets real confusing for me to understand what happens if you don’t make it to the stage 2 (MD program) because of say some subjective evaluation in an interview.

Do you have the option to move on to a masters program after three years?

Is there some amount of surety that Howard will prepare you sufficiently well for the entry to MD program (shadowing, research, workshops, volunteer opportunities)?

Would appreciate your thoughts on these situations.

Just joined to get on this board. I just got accepted into the BS/MD program and have some of the same questions. I did not think I would get it, but I did. So now all this stuff that @drbsmd mentioned is spinning in my head! Plus I am wondering if all aspects of a normal undergrad experience are out the window (i.e. do you have time to do intramurals or orchestra or choir, for instance?). The overload is substantial, but seems doable, but at what cost.

I am having a hard time finding information on this program from anyone who is in or has been in it. We have 11 days to decide and I am leaning toward taking it, but does anyone know of any negatives or the answer to @drbsmd 's questions?

@unclear how is the intimation being sent? when was it sent/received.

unclear,
When did u receive the acceptance letter and is it from Howard? We didn’t receive any letter yet.
If it is Howard then, as per my understanding it will be very busy program and I don’t think you will have time to do other activities. And I believe there will be classes in summer as well.

Hi @CaCo928‌

You seem to have some first hand knowledge of this program.

My question may sound a bit too simple but I am interested in knowing if entry into this program gives a student any advantage over a traditional candidate at the time of entry into MD part of the program?

Can you please help.

Thanks.

No, I don’t have first hand knowledge.
My comments were based on the discussion with other folks when I went to Howard with my kid for interview.
I don’t know any advantage over the traditional candidate.

I received the letter by mail. It is in just a regular envelope from the Pre Prof. Studies. It basically just said congrats you are accepted into Phase I of the BS/MD program and list the requirements to stay in it to advance to phase II.

@drbsmd I had one person who went long ago say that if you get through phase 1 and 2 you generally will get into the med school; after all they invested 6 years in you and if you do your part (3.5 GPA, completing everything) you should get in, but no promises.

I really want to know stuff like if we all live together on a dorm floor? Do we have time for ANY clubs or sports or arts? What classes exactly do we have to take? I’ll write and ask or call or something.

My head is spinning. I met the qualifications but just was not sure I would get it given how over qualified people are for this stuff. Now I wish my parents had been around when I interviewed. I went alone and didn’t really chat or ask people much. Psyched, but unsure about this.

Are you all taking it for sure if you get it? How many people are in the program now and how many do they accept?

Unclear,
Do u live near DC area? what is the date on the letter?
We live in west coast and so far no letter either way.

Hi @‌unclear

Thanks for sharing the information. It will be helpful for others in future years as well.

You mentioned: “that if you get through phase 1 and 2 you generally will get into the med school;”

I take it that you meant: “that if you get through phase 1, you generally will get into the med school (which is phase 2);”. Is that what you meant?

“after all they invested 6 years in you and if you do your part (3.5 GPA, completing everything) you should get in, but no promises”

I didn’t quite understand your thought here. Can you explain the investment part a bit. After year 2, when a student applies for MD, they have only invested 2 years in the student, right? So, what I understood here is that once you have done everything properly in the first two years, you transition to phase 2 (MD). Right?

I am gathering this information for a coworker’s son who wants to apply next year. I am researching other schools too. In some schools, they drop 15% of the BA/MD class from entering the MD part - so what is important to understand here is weather Howard does this or not?

This is where numbers can be very helpful. If we knew the % of students making to phase 2 in past 3-5 years, it would make things very clear.

“My head is spinning. I met the qualifications but just was not sure I would get it given how over qualified people are for this stuff.”

You are too modest. It is a great achievement. Congratulations!

“I really want to know stuff like if we all live together on a dorm floor? Do we have time for ANY clubs or sports or arts?”

I am sure a thread specific to this topic will draw some responses. Try it, its worth it!
