Howard University and East Carolina University are two schools that I am very interested in. I can't really decide which school to go to for premed/biology major. Both schools are great and money is not an issue for me. Based on your opinions of what each college offers which is a better choice. It can be academic wise as well as the socially. I want a well-rounded view on each school and why one is, not necessarily the better school in terms of like rank, but the better choice from a holistic view (academics, location, social scene, professors, connections etc.) Rankings make a difference, but I am against choosing a school solely because it is of higher rank than another.

How do the net prices after scholarships and financial aid compare? Medical school is expensive, so avoiding debt and saving money in undergraduate may help reduce the amount of debt after medical school. Avoiding debt is also helpful if you do not go to medical school after majoring in biology, where job prospects are not the best paid.

Also, majoring in biology is not required to do pre-med.

Run the net price calculator.
Howard is better academically though.
In any case, it’s too early to “choose”. Apply to both, and to a few others - 2 you’re sure to get into, 2-3 where you’re above the median to near the 75%, then as many others as you wish or can afford. And before you apply, run the Net Price Calculator on each (as each school calculates differently)* and cross out the schools that are too expensive, a bad value, or out of budget.

to find the NPC, type the name of the college in your search engine, followed by “net price Calculator”

I agree that you should not choose at this point. Apply to the colleges that interest you.

If you are in state, and ECU is the more affordable choice, then that would be a consideration. Another one is location- Eastern NC or a large city like Washington DC? ECU would also have a majority of students from NC, while Howard would likely have students from many areas. I think the best way to get an idea of these colleges is to visit them if you can.

In the end though, your ability to get to medical school depends more on your academic performance wherever you are than which college. Both have medical centers, both have programs of study that will prepare you for medical school. Once you know what your choices are, and the costs of them, you can decide.

Howard may be quite inexpensive if the OP has high stats and applies early enough – it has automatic full tuition to full ride scholarships for certain stats levels, although in limited numbers awarded first come first served.

ECU also has scholarships for top students. Best to apply early to both colleges for consideration.
I’m not pushing for one over the other. I just think it is best for students to apply to colleges they are interested in and spend time looking closely at them, so that when spring comes, they can make the best decision they can for themselves.

I have already applied to both colleges and have already received a decision from East Carolina as well as an invitation to apply to their honors college which I have heard pays tuition. I wont hear from Howard until Dec 15 but I am eligible for their Capstone scholarship and I applied Early Decision. I have already visited East Carolina and the campus is absolutely beautiful, but I have yet to visit Howard. What is the area around Howard like? Thank you for your replies btw! Oh and I know you don’t have to major in Biology. I want to study microbiology whether I decide finally to go the medical route or not!

Which college did you end up choosing and why? Also, did you consider the BSMD program at Howard?
