Can someone please mention the range for SAT to get Founders or Presidential Scholarship? I am an international student.
@anushaneupane I am an applicant from Nepal . Have you got your decision? I haven’t heard anything. Would you mind sharing your stats ?
@anushaneupane there has been certain changes in scholarship criteria. After my thorough research, I have concluded the following SAT requirements:
Presidential: 1530–1600
Founders: 1450–1520
Capstone : 1270–1440
I am also an International Applicant (Nepal).
The website has removed the scholarship listing this year, so we never know if they’re still providing these scholarships for this year.
I don’t think that Howard is following those scholarship parameters for the Presidential, Founders, and Capstone scholarship any longer. On another thread there was a student with a 34 ACT score (that would have been Presidential level 2 years ago) that did not get a full ride (they received 18K in loans) even though the student applied early. My daughter got a 1470 SAT score and 3.95 UW (Old Founders level) and applied early (October) who received the new Capstone which is a merit based scholarship that also takes into account income, but it is nowhere close to tuition, room, board, and $500 towards books that the Founders Scholarship recipients in the past received. We were also offered 18K in loans.
@ChangeTheGame said,
In the thread “Pros and Cons About HBCUs”, I stated
With the current scandal surrounding the theft and misappropriation of funds at Howard University’s Financial Aid Department, finding an alternative school to attend may be a much better financial and less stressful option.
@BLUEPH What is going on with Howard’s misappropriation of funds is tragic, but when I look at the details of the scandal, I see that the current administration has worked to put Howard’s financial house in order. 1 million dollars stolen over a 10 year period at a school with a 800 million dollar yearly operating budget was caught within 2 and half years of the current administration’s lead and new financial controls were put in place. The scandal for me was the school hiding the indiscretion for 15 months until a whistleblower spoke up. I am not sure how long that President Frederick will make it because the students “hate” the current administration (due to hundreds of job cuts, public relations snafus, and budget cuts) but the hospital has gone from a 58 million dollar deficit to a 4 million dollar surplus in 3 years (one such example of the finances looking better and I have seen others reviewing Howard’s bottom line). For my own family, I would prefer that my daughter understand the unique issues that Howard has and possibly choose another school, but if she ends up receiving the competitive full-ride scholarship (Bison STEM Scholars Program) to Howard, it will be her choice to make.
Has Howard mailed anyone?
@Abiral, I got accepted today. Saw the email as early as 6 am today. I applied regular decision and am an international student too
@anikeh Congratulations!!
Would you mind sharing your stats? What scholarship package did you receive? and when did you apply for regular decision?
@Abiral, G.P.A 3.8, New SAT 1330, I applied Dec 6th, 2017. The letter says my financial aid award letter will be sent by email in the coming weeks.
@anikeh which country are you from? Hope you will receive Capstone scholarship soon.
@Abiral, I am from Nigeria. I hope you hear from them soon
So, after spamming emails to Howard on where is my admission decision, Howard finally decided to reply on the last day of April saying “We are not in receipt of your transcript, and now we won’t be considering you for admission as the submission time is over.” And, I don’t know how they claim to not have my transcript, when my GC submitted it through the Common App, and other universities were in receipt of the transcript through the same application. The slow administration and communication problems at Howard has been continued over the years, but what I was absolutely not expecting from Howard was this level of irresponsibility. If they had misplaced my transcripts or were not in receipt of it, they should have informed me earlier and not when their class of 2022 has been finalized. I decided to apply to Howard despite all the scholarship scams it had been facing, for I thought Howard would still be a good place to go. And, there are a handful of other international students who haven’t heard anything from Howard yet. I suppose Howard is going to give similar reasons to them, denying them admission for no reason. I am writing this so that it might serve as a reference for future applicants.
@pessimist10 I am sorry to here that you got the run around with Howard. Based off of what I have seen with the scholarship changes, I have not seen anyone mention receiving the Presidential or Founders scholarships of years past for HU22. Those changes probably hurt the highest stats students like you most and will affect the number of International students who will attend HU in the future. My suggestion to any student who decides to apply to Howard is to apply Early Action if they can and follow up with the school by PHONE if you don’t get information in a timely manner. You could probably still push Howard for an acceptance (but all of the money is probably gone) if you sent screenshots of everything and spoke to someone in the Office of Admissions, but I would be done with them if I were in your shoes. Where are you going to school next year?
