so im a transferring student from north cal. i just wonder how's college life down there in UCI. Im thinking about going to UCI if i dont get in UC Davis which is closer to my house. I heard that since most people from UCI are from OC so they wont be staying in dorm n i would be there by myself which is suck lol.

well if your transferring then im assuming you are a third year? most people dont stay in the dorms after their first year. They tend to live off campus in apartments. So i would say it depends on who you live with. There are many people here from norcal so you probably wont be alone on the weekends… :)

It’s what you make of it. I’m a commuter who lives 5 miles away with my parents…
I spent 3-5 nights a week in a friends dorm. Half of the guys are from LA and go home on the weekend. One is from norcal and stays. He views it as an opportunity to study, he’s double majoring in (I believe) aeronautical engineering and electrical engineering and minoring in economics. He’s having fun, haha.

That does seem overexaggerated. Like, there’s a weekend probably once a month when around half the people in the dorm leave, but other than that, it’s pretty normal and well populated.

ignoring dorm life, as you dont seem to be a freshmen, try living in Newport Beach. if you dont have a decent college life there, its probably more your problem than anyone/anything else.

UCI really is a commuter school, but if you live on campus and create your own network of friends who also live on campus, it won’t be bothersome. At first glance, UCI may seem to have a lot of snobby people since they come from the surrounding area, but just realize that the majority of the population is from LA County, and LA>OC haha jk

Oh, and ofc, with OC people, you got Republicans, and you know how them conservatives are >.>

@yahoowizard
Haha I went trick-or-treating in University Hills across campus, and saw many houses with Meg Whitman posters on their lawns lol Silly Republicans :D

UCI is NOT a commuter school. Almost everyone I hear say this has no affiliation with UCI.

I read a study done by UCI OIR (office of institutional research) which found that 70% of UCI students live within two miles of campus. 40% live in actual on campus student housing. This is comparable to other UC campuses.

Bring a car and you’ll be fine

Most people believe it to be a commuter school because of the lack of activities that goes on, on weekends.

Unless you have a big group of friend, in a frat/sorority, in many clubs, aka trying to be social. There really isn’t parties where you just jump into like Santa Barbara’s Isle Vista or etc.

In that regard Irvine also completely shuts down after 11. Unless you have a car it might feel lonely if your not that social to begin with.

You might also be afraid of people being locked into their group of friends as a transfer. Basically i can tell you that if you go out to clubs and actively go out looking for people you will be fine.

I transfered in the Fall and find UCI to be amazing. It definitely has no transfer bias at all and everyone I’ve met have been great.

TLDR edition- UCI isn’t a commuter school but if your a loner don’t expect to find things to do

There’s a Gaming Cafe at the UTC, if you’re interested in that stuff!

Life is great at UCI as long as you take the effort to join clubs and frats/sororities. Otherwise, you will be among the students (not limited to transfer students) that complain about UCI. It’s a beautiful campus, and I miss it often even though I am now at UCLA!

theres a gaming cafe at the utc? where

Yep, it’s like across from the 24 hour fitness. I found it on my way back to Mesa from the Edward’s theater one day.

Here is there Yelp[/url">http://www.yelp.com/biz/ecyberdeck-irvine"]Yelp.
And this is there official webpage[/url">http://www.ecyberdeck.com/index.html"]webpage, though it hasn’t been updated since 2009 it seems, so some of the the info may be outdated, like how they don’t have SC2 available to play yet, haha, because that’s what caught my interest when I walked by, lmao! :)

@bchplz: not true. Not all of Orange County is rich, such as Santa Ana, Anaheim, and Garden Grove. A lot of people from those cities are of low-class rankings. And I haven’t met any snobby or materialistic people at all, even after living in Irvine for 6 years.
