just wondering how good an engineering degree at UCI is. im currently doing engineering at UOP and i want to transfer to UCI for many reasons. just wondering if it beats UOP in that department.

US News says UCI is ranked 30 in the nation for mechanical engineering. However, rankings really do not matter for undergraduate students. Mechanical/aerospace engineering is fairly emphasized at UCI. There are a lot of students in mechanical/aerospace compared to the other engineering majors. I had some numbers somewhere, but I forgot. Also, I've seen a lot of research, clubs, programs, and teams dedicated to mech/aero on campus. I still say it doesn't matter much for undergraduate, but you would like it more here :].

wow, 30 is good. what makes it unimportant for undergrads though?

grad school is always far more important

while a bachelor at uci is nice, its where you get your masters that makes a world of difference.

Ah, I thought I posted here already. Anyway, all engineering programs are ABET accredited so you basically end up learning the same thing. Engineering is already a packed major in itself so adding more would be futile and straining to undergraduate students. As an undergrad, the possibility of every student using all the resources provided by a university is pretty rare. Rankings by US News are not exactly dependable either. The criteria has been seen by universities as an inaccurate representation of their schools. Regardless, being at a larger school would always interest you a bit more. There will be more clubs and students. Also, there may be more labs you can get your hands on (I assume UOP doesn't necessarily have a more plentiful MAE research faculty compared to UCI -- this may not be true though) if you decide to do some undergraduate research. However, if you decide not to do research and do internships and whatnot, the education will end up being the same. In fact, UOP has some ties with Cisco Systems in Fremont. You can get connected to a job at Cisco through the program available at UOP.
