How's MCM in Brown?

I love Brown so much, for its open curriculum, location, students…I almost consider it is the perfect one that I want to apply for in ED
But…unfortunately, it doesn’t have Film major, which is my favorite. And the only relevant major is Modern Culture&Media… So I am quite confused now, I don’t know whether I should apply for it or not

So, I am here to ask how’s MCM in Brown? I’ll really appreciate Brown students’ feedbacks or advices.
Thanks :)

Not many of us are familiar with the program (this was a recent thread that received almost no responses: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/brown-university/1183281-modern-culture-media-brown.html</a>), unfortunately. It looks like it’d require a decent amount of time, and people say that it’s pretty theoretical. Once upon a time, I heard that it was viewed by Brown students as an easier major, but I haven’t heard that lately and submit that most majors are as difficult as you choose to make them. The ability to take film classes at RISD is a plus, but setting up your schedule around such classes can be a pain, I gather.

I think MCM was considered an “easier” major back in its semiotics days.

As Uroogla said, MCM approaches film study from a more theoretical basis, thanks to its beginnings as a semiotics program. However, there are many working professionals in Hollywood who got their start as MCM majors at Brown. There are some MCM classes that aren’t as theoretical. And there are also many classes at Brown in other departments that either study film, or use movies as an integral part of their classwork (assigning movies to watch in addition to assigning textbooks to read).

If you are 100% positive that you want to major in film studies, then you should look very closely at Brown’s course offerings in MCM, and even talk to professors there. You may decide it’s not right for you. But remember that many students change their mind on what they are majoring in. So if you are not 100% positive that film studies is your only interest, think carefully about applying to a school primarily based on whether it has that major.

I’m interested in MCM too. Like most people have said before, it seems as if it use more theoretical. I would definitely take advantage of dual enrollment between RISD.

Thank you so much for above replies. It does help A LOT!!
