How's this junior doing?

Hey guys! I was just wondering how do I look?

WGPA: 4.516 (no one usually gets above 5)
Rank: 11/386
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: White

SAT: 2180 (750 CR, 730 M, 700 W) (Retaking in September/October)
SAT II: 770 Chem

AP Classes: APUSH, AP Eng Lang, AP Chem (No junior in my school has ever taken it), AP Comp Sci A

EC's:

FRC Team Robotics (9-11) - 400 hours in 3 years or so. Usually places in top 3 teams every year. Head programmer of the team for this year and next. This year, our team got the Coopertition Award, Honorable Mention for Safety, 1st seeded team, and top 4 teams overall in Boston Regional.

Science Olympiad (11) - Co-Founder/Captain. Got 21st/40 in state competition this year, highest rookie placement.

MOON (10,11) - Math team. Treasurer. Highest in division for GBML competition (Greater Boston area)

Academic Decathlon (10,11) - A starter, placed 6th at regionals and 6th at states.

Varsity Swim Team (9-11) - MVP of the meet, possibly captain next year

Other smaller EC's

Recs: Will have recs from my Latin teacher who has written excellent recs for past students, and will have had him for 4 years, my AP chem teacher who has helped with MOON as well, and my mentor from my robotics team who I have spent countless hours with.

Thanks guys!

I think you’re doing just fine. Just be sure that essay/interview shows your love for robotics and whatnot, and you’ll have a chance. :)

what he said^. all your numbers look in the range. it’s all really up to your essays/interviews.

my advice: be yourself, and hope for the best.

Thanks guys. I’m glad I just make it number wise. Also, I have something to add, not to brag or make myself seem better, but just because it adds to the experience. Our Science Olympiad team has no teacher/mentor/overseer. We plan everything and work out everything on our own, which was, like I said, quite the experience this year. I’m pretty sure we won’t have one next year either.

They look good. I just hope that you also choose ordinary colleges in case the top elite colleges don’t accept you.

You might need to boost your SAT some more to 2250-2400 ranges, with the emphasis on math to be more competitive with the applicant pool. Probably also need some 800s on math+science SAT IIs to boost the application further.
Extracurricular activities look good. Other than that, there may be subjective factors here and there that may cause problems with your application such as GPA, class rank, etc… (list is endless…)

I heard somewhere that as long as you have 700+ for each section for the main SAT and the SAT Subject Tests, it was fine.

Also, isn’t GPA, Class rank, etc. objective?

You do realize that applications are given to a sub-group of reviewers. When applications are split in this manner, there’s always more of a chance that your group may have made subjective judgements toward your objective marks. No one will dispute that your grades and standardized tests scores are bad, but there will be some who will question them between good and excellent.

And you might want to consider past people in school that applied to MIT. They got rejected despite good GPA/class rank, high SAT scores, leadership, and dedication to a variety of ECs and volunteer work. So, the question that you should be asking yourself is, “what can I do that would be outstanding that most people can not achieve?” Anyone can volunteer or be a member of a school club or sport.

Don’t do activities if you don’t enjoy or are not committed to it though…!

I’m not going to take some test just to impress a committee. I will allow MIT to accept me if they feel I am a fit. I just want to know how I looked aside from my essays (which I know are a huge part).
