I was just wondering how HP laptops are if anyone has experience with them. Do you like them? Have they caused you any problems? I dont hear much talked about them on these forum things and I was just curious as to what people think of them. Thanks!

I myself do not have first hand experience with HP laptops. However, I have been doing extensive research on the best laptop to purchase no more than around $1450, and I strongly recommend to look at the HP "dv4170us" laptop, as I consistently hear great things about this particular model.

My dad and I both have HP laptops. Not sure about your knowledge of pick up trucks but he compares them to GMC trucks. GMC trucks are made to work. Toyota trucks are not. He says HP laptops are the GMCs of the laptop world; Dell are the Toyotas. They hold up really well. They're made to be portable (a little bouncing around in a bag won't kill your hard drive). Weird comparison I know, but it says something. He has had nothing but HP and Compaq laptops in the last ten to fifteen years, and he's been very happy with them. They've all outlasted his desktop computers. Naturally he bought me an HP, and though I've only had it a month and a half, and don't know much about computers; I'm very happy with it. I have the Pavillion zv6000. It was under $1000 and actually is a better computer than the one my dad paid a lot more for when he bought his last fall.

I have a limited knowledge of HPs, other than I would agree with monarchsfan16's comparison (clever, I might say). But I do know that the Compaq laptops are not built as sturdily as their HP counterparts. So I'd just avoid the Compaq brand, but if you want HP then go for it.

I have an HP dv4000 series. It works great, has great speakers, came with XP Professional. Sturdy, looks sleek, but slightly heavy (6.5 lbs). I would suggest going to www.hp.com or going to CompUSA, Circuit City, or Best Buy if you don't have time to wait for it to ship or anything. Often, if you buy from HP, you can get their printer for free or discounted price.

When I got my dv4000, I was able to purchse a printer, scanner, and copier (HP PSC 1610) for $79.99 (compared to $129.99)

My HP Pavillion dv4150us for $1049 (with rebates and everything):

Pentium M Processor (1.60 GHz)
60 GB @ 4200 RPM
512 MB SDRAM
DVD-RW/CD-RW
15.4" BrightView Widescreen (I love the screen)
Window XP Professional with Service Pack 2
Intel Integrated Wireless LAN (820.11 BG)

So since it's Intel everything, it gets the Intel Centrino sticker (probably one of the greatest marketing and business move on Intel's part).

The dv4000 series also has the ability to play DVD's and Audio CD's w/o requiring the computer to boot up (so you can just play DVD's w/o turning on the actual computer).

I recommend it and it's affordable.

My family has two Compaq notebooks, a 2105 and a 4115, both less than a year old. The 4115 was a replacment for our 9 month old 2210, which the cooling system went out in, however HP was super nice about it and took action quickly. The 2105, which I writing this post on, is a little over a month old. They're both AMD Sempron processors, but do have on-board wireless. We have no complaints what so ever. Both are very well made and run great!

Also: The more recent higher-end Compaqs are better built! The 2105 and the 4115 are much higher quaility than the 2210 ever was, and it wasn't exactly flimsy.

Yeah, I've got a Compaq Presario R3000 and I've had it for almost a year with few complaints. my only one was that the connector between the plug an whatever charges the battery got bent somehow, probably an environmental thing (my laptop doesn't just sit on my desk), and they had it fixed in 3 days round trip. on tuesday (the day after I called) fedex was at my door to pick it up, and on thursday they were dropping it off, repaired.

hmm, i was looking at the hp dv4150us. approx. how long does it take for them to ship?

I've had a HP laptop since February and I haven't had any problems so far. Two of my friends had problems though. After a year or two, their screen got messed up. Everytime they moved the laptop, even just a bit, their screen went black. Good thing they had warranties and got the laptops repaired.

jf215: CompUSA right now has them for $1099 so just drop by to get it if you can. I got mine from Best Buy at $1049 with HP PSC 1610 for $79.99 ($50 off the printer) that day two weeks ago when they had a special.

But for standard, UPS ground shipping, 5-7 business days. That's free when you order online. If you customize your HP, it will take longer than that (they will say when it will be finished being built and add 5-7 business days from there).

I didn't have that time so I went to Best Buy.

i got an hp 4150us from best buy just last week for 1199 with 200 dollar mail in rebates, so its all gonna come down to just 999. i thought it was a pretty good deal. havent had any problems with it so far.

pb32: That's the same laptop I got! :p

i like the dv1000 series

i also have a hp, i like the quick play feature. i got a 1.73 pent m,1024mb of ram,and 100gb along with other features. its the dv4170us. i paid a total of $1600 at the store whcih also included a $100 printer scanner and copier. after all the rebates the comp along with the printer will cost me $1200. the only thing bad about this comp is the volume. everything else is great, you get a remote control(yea ill be lazy and use it) and ear plugs(which compnesate for the volume).
