i am in debate and we have a 1 hr meeting weekly, however each month or so we go to tournaments for a weekend, or sometimes even 5 days. How do I answer the question: how many hrs per week do you participate in this activity?

just write 1 hr a week, then explain on a separate sheet about the 50-day tournament.

I was in the same situation for putting down work hours. Another alternative to the above post: Find the average by adding up all the hours in the month and dividing by 4 to get hours/week.

but i still say u hv to let them know about your tournaments, especially if there are no official awards

Another question about hrs/week

I'm on newspaper. We have about seven issues. Would it be better to say I work on it about 25 hours for 7 weeks, or divide that up into 30-some weeks (entire school year) with a few hours each week? The thing is, when we're not actually laying out the paper, we're still working on it by writing and designing...

i work for the school magazine; what i did was divide that into 30-ish weeks a year

this is a very hard issue to decide on...

all the clubs I've joined are busy during certain times of the year; for example acamic team will be most busy during the beginning of school year and Mu Alpha Theta will be busy towards the end of school year.

The regular club meetings just last 1 hour, but taking those busy times into account, it averages out to 2 or 3.

The problem I have is that if I average out my times for all the clubs, it turns out to be 2, 3 hours per week for more than three clubs. It just seems unbelievable that one spent this long for each club every week.

will the adcoms understand this situation?

so my point is, even if you do average it out, if you're like me, you'll have to add a sidenote.

(this seems like hijacking the thread... I'll delete the post and create a new one if it is)

To the OP: don't you have to do work outside the one hour per week meeting? I usually have 3-4 hours/week debate work...

You're all right, the averaging might not work so well after all if you're not using this towards an actual job. I think I only did a club or two in high school (didn't like extracurriculars too terribly much--actually I did newspaper, but they scheduled it like a normal class), so I don't know too much about hours/week for clubs. Sorry. :(

just how much space do college applications provide as a sidenote to the club activity list? I heard that they only give you 20 words max !?

^activity list
