HS Math Requirements?

I read on the ND website that HS completion of Algebra, Advanced Algebra & Geometry are needed for admission to Arts & Letters. I never took AA - I took Algebra II instead. Will this be a problem for me when I apply in the fall?

I would assume that Advanced Algebra and Algebra II are essentially the same course with different names. No problem there.

However, if second year Algebra is the highest math course you have taken by graduation, it will likely be a problem. Most ND freshmen have taken Calculus and you will be at a distinct disadvantage if you have only taken three years of math.

I’m taking pre-calc senior year (this coming year). Hopefully my performance in the humanities (5s on AP World, AP US and AP Psych, 750 Critical Reading, 760 US Subject Test, 740 Literature Subject Test etc.) will compensate for the underachievement in math. Besides, I plan on majoring in political science & will make that clear in my essays. Do you really think the Math courses I’ve taken could make/break my application?

In my opinion, your math course selection will not make/break your application, although it may negatively impact it. If your high school does not offer Calculus, there should not be any effect at all. You cannot be expected to take a class that is simply not available. ND’s adcoms require four years of math and you will have met this requirement.

However, if you school does offer higher math classes, it will likely be frowned upon that you have not taken them. Most ND freshmen have taken 6-8 AP classes in a full range of subjects including all five core subject areas (math, science, english, history and foreign language).

“Rigor of secondary school record” is the only factor that ND lists as “Most Important” (https://www3.nd.edu/~instres/CDS/2011-2012/CDS_2011-2012.pdf</a>). You will need to convince the adcoms that your coursework measures up.

Thanks for all your help! My school offers Calc, I just have never been available during the summers to take the classes at my school that would allow me to be accelerate. I’ll only have 6 APs under my belt by next year (and they only cover science, english & history). All that being said, it looks like ND is turning out to be a huuuuuuge reach. I’ll definitely still give it a try though.
