ND Admission question regarding math

Asking about a HS Junior- all honors courses up to this point. Did not place into honors Precalc Trig this year which means the student won’t be able to do AP Calc next year. In college prep Precalc/Trig instead. Student will still be able to take AP Stat and AP Finite Math next year. Does this ruin the student’s chance to be admitted to ND? I heard that a prospective student needed to demonstrate the ability to perform in the most rigorous courses in every core area available in their high school to be considered. This track is not the most rigorous but instead the second most rigorous. Still above grade level. Any insights would be much appreciated.

Ask your guidance counselor what you need to take in order for him to check the “most rigorous course load” box. ND is highly competitive and will be looking for a rigor on your transcript, but ultimately they will accept what your guidance counselor writes.

Are you going into STEM or business? Taking a college prep math class senior year is likely make you a less competitive ND STEM applicant. And ND only makes you apply by major to its business school.

I don’t suppose you are a legacy or recruited athlete?

I agree that you should ask the guidance counselor about about whether the schedule is rigorous and “on track.”

However, AP Calculus, to the best of my knowledge, is not required to be accepted into Notre Dame. While I think a majority of students admitted have taken an AP calculus of some sorts, I think a few of my friends did not take it in high school and began their freshman year with Calculus I.

@SHAMROCK01 - FWIW, my DS is a Junior in Mendoza. He did not take AP Calc in high school. He took AP Stats instead. He applied Regular Decision.

If you “did not place into AP trig,” was that by performance or choice? The above post is correct, your intended major would weigh heavily on how your math courses will impact your chances. If you intend on going STEM, it will be a steeper climb without calculus. It is never impossible though. Best of luck to you this year.
