Math for Freshman Year

DS accepted and interested in Arts and Letters//Theology and detests Math, despite doing well in AP Calc AB and AP Stats as a senior and doubts he'll pull a 5 on AP test. Are there "easier" math classes for the non-math folks? Are more than 2 courses required in an A&L major? Current students input much appreciated. Thank you.

Two math courses are required as part of the University core. There are “easier” math courses for those not majoring in science, engineering or math. He can check the course catalog for math course descriptions and look at the First Year of Studies web page which has all of the information about course requirements. First year advising is excellent as are the resources available from the First Year Learning Resource Center.

Thanks. Hope that AP Stats can get rid of one requirement in Math as our son claims he will never pick up a calculator again!

Only 2 math courses are required for FYS (which fulfill your university reqs) and none for Arts and Letters. There are plenty of easier courses, such as Finite Math. And if he is good at Calc but didn’t score a 5, he could even take Calc A which is similar to Calc I.

Thank you heresatheresa. DS is on way home after good 48h visit and overnight stay. Goodbye Yale and hello ND! Had great visit and def feels school is right for him. The first year advisor gave him math options among lots of useful info; moreover the freshmen he met could not have been more helpful. So thankful he applied to and got accepted.
