HS Senior, worried my low GPA will eliminate my chances of getting into CEAS for CompSci

Hi all, my freshman year was quite rough (finished with a 2.077 gpa) so my entire HS career is pulled down because of that. I have tried to make the best of it though finished my sophomore year with a 3.143 and my junior year with a 3.9 (hopefully a 4.0 my senior year!)

However, as you all know University of Cincinnati does not even look at transcripts so to them I’m just a kid with a 3.0 gpa cumulative for Fr-Jr year

I do however have a decent ACT to make up for it though after going through the acceptance discussion this year it seems its not that much if at all better than average, I have two options for what to submit for my ACT since UofC doesn’t superscore:
A 29 with a 31 in Math and a 28 in Science
or
A 30 with a 28 in math and a 28 in Science

Also I got a 4 in both AP Lang and APUSH this year and am taking two dual credits, AP Physics and AP CSP this year (plan on taking the AP CSA Exam though because one of my dual credits is a Computer Science course, and plan on taking AP Physics exam)

However neither of these are exceptionally better than what seems to be the average. I have some decent extracurriculars (Web Development Internship for Non-Profit, Officer in two clubs, NHS, BETA, and NSHSS) and I plan on killing my essay but I’m just stressed and worried that it won’t be enough.

I know no one here is an admissions counselor (well assuming, maybe some browse) but does anyone think I still have a shot? I would love to spend the first 4 years of my life in Cincy and get to take part of such an awesome coop program but I don’t think my stats will be able to pull me through sadly

We invite top students into this program who have completed 19 units of high school including:

Mathematics (4 units) including pre-calculus or calculus
Science (3 units) including physics and chemistry
Admissions decisions are made based on a variety of factors including strength of high school curriculum, GPA, class rank, ACT and/or SAT scores, participation in extracurricular activities, and essay response.

Engineering at nightQuick Facts about students in the College of Engineering and Applied Science:

15:1—student-faculty ratio
22—average class size
29—Engineering average ACT score
24—Engineering Technology average ACT score
1280—Engineering average SAT score
1100—Engineering Technology average SAT score

I was already aware of that information but that doesn’t include anything such as average gpa (reasonably so due to gpa inflation among many schools)

Those stat’s are the averages so that means some are higher and some are lower than what is listed. Nobody can tell you how admissions will go and we don’t know what else in your profile make up might swing a decision one way or another. Are you in State or OOS for this school? What other options have you been looking at?

@dcolosi I’m technically out of state as I live in Kentucky however I live in a county in Kentucky that receives the in-state tuition thanks to their KY-IN program they run (Forgot the name)

I’ve been looking at the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky as well.

And yea I understand that I’m just generally trying to see who has been accepted with what stats in CEAS to see how my profile stacks up against theirs. I also has some good extracurricular though nothing amazing can basically be summed up as such:
National Honor Society, BETA, National Society of High school Scholars
Officer of Y-Club (A community impact club hosted by The YMCA that attends 4 statewide conferences a year, in charge of about 120 students)
Officer in a separate club of about 30-45 students that is more focused on service to the school not the community
Project Manager and Leader of my own volunteer service project about feeding the homeless last veterans day, served about 120 meals.
Intern for a local service based non profit, Web Developer.

I also totally plan on writing a kick ass essay and feel I do have a chance I just am really stressed out and firm statistics help me ease that stress

As far as demographics I’m pretty basic:
White
Lower Middle Class
One parent w/ College, one parent w/ high school diploma
First male in my family heritage to go to college

I hear you. Admissions is very stressful and the reality of it is nobody can really know for certain which way any application may go. Sounds like you have a well rounded background and I was aware of that program for KY with the university, we have something similar being in Indiana and my younger D is interested in UC as well.

You have an upward trend in your GPA. They will take that into consideration. I know it’s a buzzword, but admissions takes a holistic approach to your application. If it were just numbers, there would be no issue. What they’re trying to do for these high-demand programs is to put together the best class possible from the applicant pool for a given admissions cycle. My point in listing the middle 50% stats was to show you that you’re already competitive with people who successfully applied. It is, however, a competition. There are a limited number of spots in the program.

I’m not sure why you think that they don’t look at your transcripts. They do.

The co-op program is awesome, and mean’s when you get your degree in Computer Science, yould hit the market like CS Grads from other universities, but you’ll have some experience under your belt, and likely a job offer if you’ve shown yourself in a good light where you’ve co-opped.

Good luck. Don’t sit tight. You might, if possible want to enroll in an ACT test prep course. Some of your competition will. Just saying. My daughter boosted her score 4 points after a 6 weeks of test practice/prep. She didn’t suddenly grow 10-15% smarter in a month or so. My point being, test prep does help. Bump your score up to 32, and you’re golden.
