April 2010

Dear Hubert H. Wakeham Scholarship Recipient,

Congratulations on being selected as a Hubert H. Wakeham Scholarship recipient at UC Davis for 2010-2011! This prestigious award clearly indicates that you are in a very select group. As such, we invite you to apply to the Integrated Studies Honors Program (ISHP), an invitational residential honors program. Hubert H. Wakeham Scholars are given preferential placement in ISHP, although you must indicate your interest by submitting the Application to Participate available on our web site. You must also accept the Wakeham Scholarship. The Integrated Studies Honors Program is an “Honors at Entrance” program and is the oldest living-learning community in the UC System. Membership is offered only to students in the top 10% of the entering class. One of the great benefits of the ISHP is living in Miller Hall, a premier dorm space in the Segundo Residential Complex. All 120 ISHP students will live together in this supportive environment. I urge you to check out our web site for the detailed description of the program: [UC Davis - Integrated Studies - Invitational Honors Program](http://integratedstudies.ucdavis.edu) . Especially note that all ISHP members receive priority registration and library privileges traditionally limited to Regents Scholars.

If you are selected to become part of the ISHP, you will take two specially designed four-unit honors courses and two one or two-unit special seminars during the year for a total of 10-11 honors units. Each four-unit class is taught by a dynamic faculty member selected for ISHP participation, and enrollment is limited to 25 ISHP students. Our courses fulfill UCD’s General Education (GE) requirements for both “Topical Breadth” and “Writing Experience”. Although they are multi- or inter-disciplinary, each course focuses on one of the three GE areas: 1) Sciences and Engineering (8A), 2) Arts and Humanities (8B), or 3) Social Sciences (8C). Please refer to our web site for a listing of courses for the current year. If you satisfactorily complete the ISHP requirements, your transcript will be noted “Completed Integrated Studies Honors Program, A Freshman Honors Program”.

The Integrated Studies Honors Program is one of the two campus-wide honors programs that Wakeham Scholars at UC Davis can consider. The second honors option open to you is the Davis Honors Challenge (DHC), a larger, open application program providing special courses, close contact with the DHC faculty, and interaction with similarly motivated peers. Unlike the ISHP, the DHC does not give preferential placement to Wakeham Scholars. Information on the DHC applications will be sent to all students who submit a UCD Statement of Intent to Register by May 1, and approximately 200 first-year DHC students will be selected to participate. You may not participate in both honors programs simultaneously, although students can potentially switch between the programs in later years.

To find out more about the Integrated Studies Honors Program, please be our guest at an informal “Open House” in Thompson Hall in the Segundo Complex, from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Picnic Day, the campus open house, Saturday, April 17. I will give a brief overview of the program around 1:15 p.m., and then current students and alumni will be on hand to talk with you about our program and provide a tour of Miller Hall, the ISHP residence hall. Please e-mail your response for attending our Picnic Day Open House to jhmoody@ucdavis.edu or phone (530) 752-9760 no later than April 15.

I sincerely hope you can visit our open house and learn more about the ISHP program on Picnic Day. Again, the application on our web site must be submitted by May 1 separate from your acceptance of the Hubert H. Wakeham Scholarship Award. To insure receipt of your application, please e-mail jhmoody@ucdavis.edu to indicate that you have submitted your application. You will receive an e-mail acknowledgement when your application has arrived in the Integrated Studies Honors Program office.

Again, I do hope you will apply to join us in this very special program!

Sincerely,
